Presidents report
It was great to see so many attending this morning and to be able to welcome Dr Phil Hill and Claire from the RC of Fitzroy as our guest speakers and also our guests and prospective members Phil, Ian, and Stuart and Gail. Thank you Rob for chairing a meeting with a good dose of fun and laughter.
Directors’ reports and announcements
All scholarship for students in Maubisse have been awarded to high school students. Agropina has received her last university scholarship so that se can finish her midwifery study this year. The Wayne Gregson scholarship has been awarded to a university student who has been accepted to study communication and journalism, but no students were accepted for medicine. This means that the George Waters scholarship for medicine will need to be awarded at a later stage when there is a candidate.
Cathie gave us an update on RYLA …………………….
Solar Smiles Dental Charity
Dr Phil Hill presented on the Solar Smiles Dental Charity and the big difference that can be made in countries like Timor Leste. The charity was initiated and is overseen by the Rotary Clubs for Albert Park and Fitzroy. Dental caries is a huge problem in countries such as Timor Leste due to the consumption of sugar and inadequate exposure to fluoride. The charity provides free education and treatment, including care that helps preventing caries since this is so important to reduce the risk of chronic disease. The cost of supplying toothbrushes and toothpaste for daily use together with twice yearly application of SDF is estimated to be $2.83 per student per year. The solar operated transportable dental chairs are a great help to provide services in rural and remote communities. Enfermeiro Dentista and the charity with it’s mobile dental kit are capable of:
•    Supporting the delivery of Toothbrushing Program in the schools
•    Delivering SDF to students twice per year
•    Providing check-ups, scale and clean, and full charting of each student
•    Performing simple fillings and extractions to students
•    Sending Australian Clinical Dental Teams to Maubisse to mentor and train Timorese Dentists and Oral Health Therapists to build knowledge and capacity building and perform complex fillings and extractions for students and community members approximately 4 - 6 weeks per year.
Phil also, mentioned the great leadership by George Waters that enhanced the work by the charity and its impact in Timor Leste. The pictures below show portable dental chair and Dr Simon Khalil (Australian) mentoring Savio Moreira (Timorese Oral Health Therapist), EBF Betulala November 2018.

RecLink Cricket

Rotarians will recall that we have for the last few years supplied a BBQ and drinks for the Reclink Bendigo Victory Football club.   Recklink have also put together a cricket competition and have a Bendigo team.   Their season is well under way and they have 2 home games and have asked us if we could again supply a BBQ.

Their next and final game is the 19th February.  I am seeking the help of 3 or 4 Rotarians who can help with the BBQ for the players and supporters on each of these days.

It is at Cal Gully Oval and we aim to feed them about 1:15 to 1:30, so if we could be set up ready to cook by about 12.45 pm

In line with Reclink’s request we will supply vegi burgers, coleslaw, sausages and water for the drink

As many Rotarian will attest this is a fun activity in supporting those that are in need, It is also a great fellowship activity.

We need about 2 or 3 Rotarians, but the more the merrier. Please let me know if you can help out on the day.

The 16 Commandments Of Growing Old

#1. Talk to yourself, because there are times you need expert advice.

#2. Consider “In Style” to be the clothes that still fit.

#3. You don’t need anger management. You need people to stop pissing you off.

#4. Your people skills are just fine. It’s your tolerance for idiots that needs work.

#5. The biggest lie you tell yourself is, “I don’t need to write that down. I’ll remember it.”

#6. You have days when your life is just one tent short of a circus.

#7. These days, "on time” is when you get there.

#8. Even duct tape can’t fix stupid, but it sure does muffle the sound.

#9. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could put ourselves in the dryer for ten minutes, then come out wrinkle-free and three sizes smaller?

#10. Lately, you’ve noticed people your age are so much older than you.

#11. “Getting lucky” means walking into a room and remembering why you’re there.

#12. When you were a child, you thought nap time was punishment.  Now it feels like a mini vacation.

#13. Some days you have no idea what you’re doing out of bed.

#14. You thought growing old would take longer.

#15. Aging sure has slowed you down, but it hasn’t shut you up.

#16. You still haven’t learned to act your age, and hope you never will.
