President's Message

Back in January [2017] as THE STRATEGIC PLANNING OFFICE Rotary surveyed no less than “30,000 members of the Rotary family, including 20,000 Rotarians”.

When asked about the traits of their ideal organization, almost all Rotarians, [95%] and Rotaractors, [97%] prize transparency and accountability.

And, according to Rotarians, the two top benefits of membership are
1]      Positively impacting their local community, and
2]      Friendship/Fellowship

On those notes, herewith mine:

Thank you to all those members who came along to The Bridge this morning:  We had opportunity to disagree and argue and be pleased about some board decisions.

I circulated a Wish List of Committees for consideration.

Today, men are raking stones in front of THE SHED, and later, RecLink footy beckons the caterers at Cal. Gully..

Friday night August 11th is Eaglehawk’s Trivia Night at the new showgrounds. See flyer below.

Sunday the 13th District beckons at an Image and Marketing Day.

Tuesday August 15th is Rochester Safety Day and Rob ‘n’ George at the Cycling Classic Planning Evening.

Sunday August 20th: District Governance Director Information Day re
Child Safety legislation, at TABCORP Park Melton.

Board meeting [7/8/17] highlights:

Electronic communication challenges did not deter any one of our board members from attending at Pat’s Pub for that balance of great fellowship and serious decisions.

Excess funds from our weekly little pay-for-guest-breakfast raffle:
Treasurer Peter will include a note in this bulletin.
Excess change/funds into Bendigo FoodShare tins.

Child Safety Legislation:
Relevant committee members, and president, to attend the District Governance Director information day August 20, 2017.
Their report to the board September 11 will determine our way forward.

In the meantime, “all bets are off”:
Our club will not officially engage with any person under the age of eighteen years under any circumstance whatsoever.
That is, under any circumstance whatsoever.

Definite, robust, non-ambiguous decision.

Donation re Cyclone Debbie
The board finally received a recommendation from RAWCS, inviting us to contribute to a $94K proposal to construct a Heritage Trail at Airlie Beach.
We decided that such project is not consistent with our humanitarian relief aims, and therefore our donation offer has been rescinded.

Aside, RACG: I am persevering with potential RACG-RCoBS humanitarian relief for two of the Karen community in Bendigo, via Bendigo Community Health Service. The process is slow.

Youth Services:
Martin delivered an excellent comprehensive report:

Weeroona College breakfast club agenda is back on the table.

Consistent with Youth Services aims, at clusters level, I wish to align our club with Lightning Reef, as “our” Primary School.

Other snippets relevant to us:

  • RYPEN: a poor response to the March camp but quite a bit of interest for October. Bendigo South has agreed to coordinate.

  • Youth Exchange: Bendigo is hosting a girl from Germany and, Bendigo South and Eaglehawk will be sharing a French boy. [“Victor”]

I did meet Victor from France at National Tree Day tree planting, showing him how to use a long-handled shovel, and brushing up on my French.

  • Science Engineering Challenge: A successful event by Bgo South

  • ConocoPhillips Science Experience. Information available soon and a
great opportunity for year 9/10 students at a very low cost.

  • RYLA: Clubs encouraged to start looking for applicants and to keep in touch with applicants.
I’ve met more than one person who has told me:
“RYLA changed my life”

  • ROADEC: Kangaroo Flat needs more support.

Aside, I did have a lot of fun at Girton Gramma School “presenting” our donation to their Community Service “Arm”, at Assembly.
A succinct PowerPoint presentation simultaneously “pushed” the Rotary logo and images of GGS volunteers at Australia Day.
Meeting the headmaster and discussing confluent ambitions in Bendigo was a big plus. He’s agreed to provide a GGS band Good Friday.

Adrian’s Report included
The Shed Project (knitting group)
Shelving has been donated by Danny O’Brien, dismantled and transported to the shed at the Mechanics Institute grounds, and reconstructed.
The official opening will take place on 26 October.

Local community engagement
A request had been received by Linda McNeil for partnership with Jenny's early learning centre at the Bendigo Hospital. We decided that our club does not have the appropriate resources to respond to this request.

Aside, Adrian reminded me that his deputy will step in whilst he’s on leave: initially Graeme Lynas will attend September board meeting.

And, Adrian and I need to follow up a humanitarian project:
Assisting a young man “Americu”, in Maubisse, crippled with polio.

Aside, again, we had an invitation, within Rotary, to mount a response to National Stroke Week.
My response is that that only trained experienced medical professionals should be measuring blood pressure and offering any advice, and then,
only within a proper medical assessment facility.
Aside from the work of organising a response, there does exist a risk of criticism or, at worst, litigation, in the medical arena.
Invitation declined.

Peter’s Treasurer’s Report:
Details are on ClubRunner within agenda board meeting August 7, 2017.

BIG GIVE DAY is a crowd funding event May 4, 2018 orchestrated by an ex member Anne Lansberry Chief Executive Officer of Community Foundation for Central Victoria.
Action:       Paul Kirkpatrick understands BIG GIVE DAY, and we shall seek his detailed advice.

Our markets champion Madelaine Coles is now with Remembrance Parks:
She wished to inform us of a Father’s Day event:
Noted. No action.

Strategic Plan:
I’ve collated and actually read through reams of notes 2013 – 2017.
Next step: A “Warwick Cavell” One Page Plan composed at a board workshop.

Would our 2018/19 President, “ghost” please arise, and go along to president-elect function:

Tree planting, to meet Ian Riseley’s ambitions:
Camp Getaway are pulling trees out.
Ted may have opportunity for us to plant at OTIS sites.

Numbers:
Ian Riseley seeks statistics from all clubs with respect to all pecuniary and other resource donations to communities, and, record of volunteer-hours.
Noted.  No action.

Markets:
Councillor Jennifer Alden met with Peter Rainey and I to submit her wish that Australia Day reflect the cultural profile of Bendigo, suggesting an eight-marquee food court. Agreed, in principle.
Action: Australia Day committee assess financial repercussions.

I met with Peter Rainey to discuss human resources Australia Day.
Bottom Line:       Peter needs two members as under study.
Done:        Mark Weragoda and Rob Rosaia.

Social:
As soon as we “lock in” our social committee members, [Done today], the board exhorts action towards Christmas and our thirtieth anniversary celebrations, and any other delightful ideas that the committee may birth.

Board Paper:
We received a paper recommending:
That the Board approve the donation of $**,*** to the Golden Dragon Museum, (Bendigo Chinese Association Museum Inc.) for this very important project to create a new Imperial Dragon for the City –
“Dai Gum Loong” with RCoBS becoming a “Dai Gum Loong Gold Partner.
Action:  Further clarification from Doug.

Vocational Service
After a protracted email conversation with Alan Seale the Vocational Service District Rotarian we agreed to differ:
I’ve deleted the term “Vocational Service” from our committees.
It’s what any Rotarian does anyway.

Polio Comes to Bendigo
It will be my delightful duty to act as MC for the Polio Network Victoria’s major annual event at Bendigo Town Hall, in October. This is a group of true survivors, now burdened with the second round, the Post-Polio medical Syndrome, and, those nightmarish memories and recall of life as a kid with polio in the fifties. Not nice. Go find a little book:

“Iron Cradles” by Carol Mara [ALLEN & UNWIN] 1999 IBSN 1 86508 020 9

Programme Director:
Ideas:
1]      NBN
An expert to give us the unadulterated facts:
Peter Elliott believes that he may be able to find just such expert.
2]      VicRoads
Similar idea:
Ravenswood and Napier Street.

I’ve attached a missive of supplication we received:
NEW BENDIGO HOSPITAL APPEAL
Bendigo Health Foundation.

Excerpts from the Wish List of Committees explanatory notes:

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL CITATION
To enable RCoBS to achieve this status, and we can, we need one “champion” “all over it”.  I’ve done the primary foot work.

THE ROTARY FOUNDATION
We need fresh blood:
A member needs to “get a handle on” “Foundation” and advise us.
First job, please, is to liaise with Merlyn Quaife at RC Bendigo South re organising:
Foundation Information evening:
Foundry Arms
Thursday November 30, 2017.

MARKETING AND IMAGE
This is a recurring theme in all members’ comments.
Social media pushes us to live or die by the keyboard and the image.
Information Day
Trinity College Kew
Sunday August 13, 2017.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
        This is so important.
I’m willing to pass on the contacts I have.
This topic needs an assertive, aggressive champion to lead some meetings with locals who have the expertise.
Jill Barker AG is willing to donate her time and expertise, as too, Kim and Tabitha from RC Bendigo.
[IT for markets is separate.]

RURAL ROTARY LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE

MEMBERSHIP
Needs a “brainstorming” session, in a room at Goldfields Library.
        Attack Timeline:
September – October once we bed down Strategic Plan.

A Special Mention to our least young member John Langley:
That Peugeot is always first into the car park, raffle prize organised; paper copy of Bulletin in hand, and, ever ready to help with set up.

John, you are this week’s Champion.

Happy Birthday to Judy Miatke, and that young gun Glenn Reilly.

Travel safe to our ever-mobile Rotarians; and may your week be what you want it to be, and more.

… … … G for George.

Jokes
An 85-year-old man had to do a sperm count for his physical exam. The doctor gave the man a jar and said, "Take this home and bring back a sample tomorrow."
The next day, the 85-year-old man reappeared at the doctor's office and gave him the jar, which was as clean and empty as on the previous day.
The doctor asked what happened, and the man explained …
"Well, doc, it's like this — first I tried with my right hand, but nothing. Then I tried with my left hand, but still nothing. Then I asked my wife for help.
"She tried with her right hand, then with her left, still nothing. She tried with her mouth, first with the teeth in, then with her teeth out, still nothing. We even called up Arleen, the lady next door, and she tried too, first with both hands, then an armpit, and she even tried squeezin' it between her knees, but still nothing."
The doctor was shocked. "You asked your neighbor? Good heavens!"
The old man replied, "Yep, none of us could get the jar open."
