President's Message

Congratulations to Patti Cotton, Carol Cooke, Nancy Wyatt and our inimitable Ray Carrington for achieving front page and a long article in Networker, acknowledging the Knitting Project, and the Grand Opening of the RANCH at Mechanics Institute California Gully.
R      Ray
A      And
N      Nancy
C      Carol
H      Home.
Patti was our guest speaker today, accompanied by her team, and “driver” David.
Patti can only guess at the actual number of knitters involved and the positive effects on not only the families in Timor-Leste, but also knitters and the sewing teams from the Friends of The Bendigo Art Gallery.
Patti gave us clues as to the real extent of the Project.
Little did we know some of the “spin-offs” from the mainstream of knitted garments for infants in Maubisse:
Garments via Toni Carrington into Bendigo Health;
Grateful refugee mums and newborns at Northern Hospital;
Soft toys to the local leukaemia support group; and,
Volunteers scouring Op Shops across the nation for baby singlets.

Kevin, Rob and Bruce are nervous:
If they leave our trailer or cool room, out of our RCoBS shed for more than minutes, it’s likely to be filled with knitting !!

David has stepped into multiple roles:
At home, from his study, as he spotted yet another donor at the front gate, he slipped into the rehearsed routine:
Unload,
Toilet,
A cuppa, and,
Then, a chat.

It is a mark of respect for Patti that the ladies who made those first four phone calls some ten years ago, are still stalwart supporters and close friends.
She generously acknowledged not only her “Team” but also Morri Sharkey at Goornong; Peter Young at Radius, Vallon Gibson of Quality Wool Bendigo, and Rotarians.

George.
It is time for us to put on our thinking caps and see if we can identify people within our community who may be
eligible for recognition for a Shine On award.

The Shine On Awards specifically acknowledge the great volunteer service that people with disability contribute to their local and wider community.
These awards recognise people living with chronic illness/disease, physical or intellectual limitations or mental health disorders, to focus
upon the abilities of those living with disability.

Nominations are to be submitted by November 15th with the Award Ceremony being held in April 2018.  The Shine On committee have provided a
quick outline showing how you and your Club can become involved.  If you have any questions about Shine On, or want to contribute to the program,
please contact our District 9800 representatives;

Louise Bugeja
phone: 0418 597 427

Margie Desmyth
phone: 9593 3543

Even if you yourself can’t think of a recipient right now, please share the information about the Awards with your fellow Rotarians at your next club
meeting, in your bulletin or on your website as someone within your community may know the perfect award recipient who is very deserving of
acknowledgement.

Cheers,
Del King,
Community Service Chair

D9800 conference March 16-18, 2018

The conference is in Warrnambool, a beautiful coastal town situated on the Prince’s Highway  south east of Melbourne and dating from the gold rush days of the 1850’s. It is a fabulous location and we hope you’ve had a look at the website to gain some idea of what’s in store;

We look forward to keeping you informed and to seeing you there.
Regards,

PLEASE BE SURE TO NOTE THE EARLY BIRD REGISTRATION CUT OFF DATE OF NOVEMBER 30TH 2017.

Kevin Reade has organized next year’s

Rotary Weekend Away

at Barham Caravan Park.

12 booked so far

Friday 27th Saturday 28th

Sunday 29th April 2018.

Caravan sites and

onsite cabins available.

Bookings 54532553 and say

you are with RCOBS for the booking.

This is always a great weekend.

Just back on the main island of Samoa after our two week Rotary project in Auala Village on the big island of Savaii. Wonderful work from the team with a few of the usual (expected) setbacks. The school principal said the installation of the ten laptops and associated works was the best day in her teaching career. We certainly hope that the resources will give the year 7&8 students a better chance when they get to the senior school.

Cheers

Paul

Jokes
An old woman rode up, got off her old mule and tied it to the hitching post.
As she stood there, brushing some of the dust from her face and clothes, a young gunslinger stepped out of the saloon with a gun in one hand and a bottle of whiskey in the other.
The young gunslinger looked at the old woman and laughed, "hey old woman, have you ever danced?"
The old woman looked up at the gunslinger and said, "No... I never did dance... Never really wanted to."
A crowd had gathered as the gunslinger grinned and said "well, you old bag, you're gonna dance now," and started shooting at the old woman's feet.
The old woman prospector -- not wanting to get a toe blown off - started hopping around.
Everybody was laughing. When his last bullet had been fired, the young gunslinger, still laughing, holstered his gun and turned around to go back into the saloon.
The old woman turned to her pack mule, pulled out a double-barreled shotgun, and cocked both hammers. The loud clicks carried clearly through the desert air, and the crowd stopped laughing immediately.
The young gunslinger heard the sounds, too, and he turned around very slowly.
The silence was almost deafening.
The crowd watched as the young gunman stared at the old woman and the large gaping holes of those twin barrels.
The barrels of the shotgun never wavered in the old woman's hands, as she quietly said, "Son, have you ever kissed a mule's ass?"
The gunslinger swallowed hard and said,"No ma'am... But I've always wanted to."
THERE ARE FIVE LESSONS HERE FOR ALL OF US:
1 - Never be arrogant.
2 - Never waste your ammunition.
3 - Whiskey makes you think you're smarter than you are.
4 - Always make sure you know who has the final power.
5 -Don't mess with Old People; they didn't get old by being stupid.

I'm pretty sure these nudists are totally stoned
