Stephan Gollan visited our Club recently.  He is the son of Bob and Mary Gollan.  Stephan has already been to 72 countries.  He showed a video presentation of some of his travels.  He has enjoyed the journey so far, is fascinated by the people he has met, and finds the places he goes extremely interesting.  His recommendation is to go where and do what interests someone the most.  On his travels, he eats anything that is put in front of him.  President Bob Gollan thanked Stephan, and reminded him that Stephan had said he would decide what he would do with his life when he turned 25 years old.  Stephan is 25 this year.

Nora and Doug Crumback of Swan Valley Honey presented information about their business, and honey bees.  Creston bee colonies produce nearly twice as much as similar ones in the Okanagan, due to the higher heat and dryness there.  In one colony or hive, there is one queen bee, approximately 200 drones, and nearly 60,000 worker bees.  The worker bees are all female, and the drones are all male.  The drones role is to simply mate with the queen bee.  Unfortunately for them, they die immediately after.  A queen bee lays nearly 2,000 eggs each day.  Doug explained more about beekeeping, and how he is making some changes in how he does things.  He answered a number of question about bees, beekeeping, and, with Nora on the slideshow, had a very interesting presentation.

Sena Hasumi was our speaker today.  Sena is a Japanese Rotary Exchange Student from Hanyu, Japan and is being hosted by the Creston Valley Rotary Club. Sena has two sisters and is in Grade 11.  She has been in Creston for the past 9 months, and has 1 month left on her exchange.
She has learned a lot about her own family and Japan be being away.  She has learned to appreciate kindness of others much more.  Sena likes to help out, and volunteers often.  She helped with the Christmas hampers project.
She definitely notices the difference in the school systems.  Here there is much more freedom and independence.  In Japan, she has a “homeroom” and attends class with most of the same “homeroom” classmates.  Wearing her school uniform (when in Japan) gives her a sense of pride in her school and her education.
Shown in the picture are Cheryle McMillan, Sena Hasumi and Bob Gollan.

Paul Hutcheson was today’s speaker.  He spoke of his hopes that a spirit of collaboration is starting between government agencies, business, arts and community groups.  He believes our community is on the verge of change.  He feels that collaboration/co-operation/mutual support will make our community more vibrant and strong.  Marc Archabault, who is President of the Creston Community Radio station and on the board for the Creston Music and Media Society, also spoke.  He believes that support for all businesses is important, and that connecting and building relationships is instrumental to success.  Both were thanked by Don Tarrant.  The photo shows Paul, Don, and Marc.

Today’s program was introduced by Scott Veitch. From the Town of Creston, Town Manager Lou Varela (a Club member) and Manger of Engineering Colin Farynowski made a presentation.  They had copies of the Corporate Strategic Plan for 2013-2014.  Within that there are a number of worthwhile points of interest.
The Official Community Plan will be reviewed and revised over the 2014 and 2015 years.  Public input is sought and is what makes the process work.
There was information about the upgrade to the Pine Street and Northwest Boulevard intersection.  The approximate $5 million project is being paid mostly by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, with the cost for the Town of Creston being $150,000.
A new program for fire fighters to gain experience after training is being developed, so it can act as a stepping stone to for future full time employment.
There was lots of information about Creston streets and roads, and their general maintenance.  For every dollar spent for pavement preservation, $6 - $10 is saved.  Creston has 45 km of roads and 5 km of lanes.

In many ways, Rand was a large part of our club’s glue (all-purpose, of course) as he diligently tended our website and helped to link us to “the outside world” when necessary. He was certainly our model, never missing a meeting and shouldering his share of club projects to the best of his ability and a full measure of enthusiasm. But above all he was Rand, the fellow whose unique sense of humor could make even the dullest business meeting time well spent. For all these reasons we will remember him and he will be with us in spirit at every meeting to come.

Club President, Don Tarrant, presents a cheque for $1000.00 to Tyson Steed representing the Grade 6/7 class at Canyon/Lister Elementary School.  The class, along with teacher Judy Gadicke, will travel from Sandpoint to Seattle by train and then take the ferry from Seattle to Victoria. During the June trip students will stay at the University of Victoria and visit the Parliament Buildings, the BC Royal Museum, the Shaw Ocean Centre and the Pacific Geoscience Centre.  The students have worked hard with bake sales, pizza sales.  They sold poinsettas and Easter flowers.  They also had support from the Creston & District Credit union and Area B director.  They are very close to their $15,500.00 goal.

I attended the Green Valley Rotary club meeting and exchanged pendants with them and was warmly received.  It is a smaller club of about 50 members and I found it more welcoming than at the big Tucson club.  We are enjoying the warm weather here and wish we could send some up to you.  Hello to everyone in the club and hope things are well with you there.
