This coming Saturday will be an exciting day for seven Rotarians from our District, as they begin their journey to Guatemala to check on the status of our global grant projects and possibly identify potential new projects.  They will be spending the first day in the beautiful colonial city of Antigua to get acclimated and then travel 8 hours by bus to get to the remote region of Uspantan.

The team will be hosted by the county of Uspantan. They will be visiting several villages that are requesting community projects.  The team will do needs assessments, as well as determine the sustainability of projects that are presented by the communities.  Our District has been doing projects in this region since 1996.  Most of our projects have been to construct potable water and sanitation systems for Mayan villages, but we have also done major projects related to education and maternal/child health. The team will be presenting a plaque in honor of the wonderful former mayor that was recently killed in a tragic accident. We hope to form a good working relationship with the new mayor.

The team consists of Deborah, Dick and Carolyn from our club, as well as two Rotarian from the Los Alamos club and one from Silver City. They will also be interacting with two Guatemalan Rotary clubs.
