Buena Vista Guatemala Project
For many years, the Rotary Club of Santa Fe has been partnering with Rotary clubs in Guatemala to provide funding for potable water and sanitation projects to villages. This year, we will be assisting the Mayan community of Buena Vista.
We are pleased to have this opportunity to do another project with sustainable impact.
The remote mountain village of Buena Vista is home to some 255 families. They are partially supported by an antiquated and dilapidated water system that provides unchlorinated water to about 1/3 of the community. Most of the village has never been connected to a potable water system. Every day the women and girls of Buena Vista trudge 4.9 KM, up a mountainside to fetch water for their families from a contaminated spring.
This project will connect every household to a new potable water system. Community members will receive training in hygiene from the local health department. Villagers have agreed to form a water committee with responsibility for routine chlorination and maintenance of the new water infrastructure. The county of Uspantan will provide the engineering survey and the skilled labor for construction, and the beneficiaries will contribute their manual labor. Construction materials will be purchased with funding from the Rotary Global Grant.
