Cultural Literacy: Deepening Global and Historic Understandings

Kat Bernhardt serves as an advancement associate at the School for Advanced Research (SAR) in Santa Fe. SAR is a preeminent institute established in 1907 to support advanced scholarship in anthropology, the humanities, and Native American arts.

In her role, Bernhardt works at the intersection of community outreach, institutional development, and educational program management. She is heavily involved in coordinating SAR's public seminar initiatives, literary partnerships—including the Santa Fe International Literary Festival—and specialized regional field programs that bridge historical research with contemporary community dialogue.

At our September 11 meeting, Bernhardt will explore the concept of Cultural Literacy. She will discuss how expanding our shared literacy around regional history, indigenous art forms, and anthropological insight deepens community empathy, strengthens civic engagement, and helps preserve the diverse cultural landscape of Northern New Mexico.
