My name is Chris Figureida and I run a nonprofit program called Cycle for Heart.  The Rotary Club of Ventura, in Ventura CA, and myself would like to ask if any of your club members would be gracious enough to host me for two nights on Wednesday September 2nd and Thursday September 3rd? Cycle for Heart is where I bicycle across the USA; collaborating with the American Heart Association, I stop at elementary, middle, and high schools, colleges and universities, to give free presentations to the students about living a healthy and active lifestyle.

The annual Football Books Fundraiser has kicked off!
If you're a fan of football or a fan of money, then you should be a fan of the Football Books. The FM-AM Club is again allowing us to partner with them for the month of August to raise money for our service projects by selling gaming books to friends, family and colleagues. The books sell for $25. The buyer is then entered into a drawing each week to win $50 based on the final game score of the Monday Night Football game. Superbowl halftime is $50 and final score is $100. Winners are automatically notified and sent a check in the mail. Easy and fun!

The governor spends his or her year traveling the district visiting each club and spending time with the leadership of those clubs. It's a huge job! Tonight we are honored to have Governor Craig Loughery from Ely Rotary Club visiting us to talk about membership, his vision for the year and to learn about our club.

Board members will meet at 4:30 pm at Lucky's 13 Pub for a pre-meeting with the Governor.

Apples, Apples, Apples!

The kids at CHARISM Community program in Fargo were Making their Neighborhoods Better by learning the Rotary Four-Way Test last week and hosting a community orchard dedication on Thursday, July 23 at McCormick Park, 2101 9th Ave S, Fargo.

FMPM Literacy Chair Meagan McDougall, along with FMPM Vice President Deborah Maertens and FMPM Foundation Chair Kriss Burns helped to coordinate efforts with CHARISM to host the free-will offering picnic.  An Apple Basket filled with apple-related items was raffled to raise additional funds. Approximately 100 people attended the event, including the CHARISM campers, volunteers and staff, CHARISM board members, area Rotarians and McCormick Park residents.

After the picnic, the FMWF Chamber of Commerce conducted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new orchard. The two trees FMPM donated last summer were planted, with plans for cherry, plum and apricot trees to join them in the near future, thanks to a grant from the North Dakota USDA. The Blue Angels also made an appearance as the jets practiced maneuvers overhead in preparation for last weekend's Fargo AirSho. The kids then presented some of their apple-picking inventions and apple business plans before serving the crowd apple dumplings and ice cream  for dessert. Enjoy the photos from the event by clicking on the photo album.

The winner of the Apple Basket was Tracy Arntson (left) visiting from Killeen, TX. "The kids were so excited and I can't believe the beautiful garden they have created. What an amazing partnership."

What the heck is ClubRunner? And why does Darcy keep telling me to use it?

It's a webpage, it's a file cabinet, it's a scrapbook, it's a directory. ClubRunner is the online club management software we pay for each year to help us keep everything (and everyone!) organized. But sometimes it's slow and cumbersome. You have to login to take advantage of its features, and then you'll probably have to take an evening to play around to figure out what it's capable of.

My goal is to get us all using ClubRunner. Here's why:

Tuesday November 12th, our Rotary Members decorated a tree we sponsored for this year Festival of Trees! In support of the five FM area Rotary clubs drive towards literacy, the tree was decorated in Rotary Blue & Gold with children’s books tucked in.  It turned out beautifully and will also make a for a great gift for the family it is given to after its run on display at the FARGODOME November 14th through December 6th.  We would like to give a special thank you to Laurel Mahan for donating all the decorations to make this special tree possible!

Bryan Anderson has traveled to Tanzania twice as part of the Lake Park (Minn.) Lutheran delegation to a remote village near Arusha. In addition to water and agricultural projects, the group builds personal relationships with new friends and shares in fellowship with young students at the diocese-sponsored school. Bryan's wife Dawn and teenage daughter Maegan made the trip to Africa in 2011. In July, Bryan will again be returning with his two teenage sons, Jacob (13) and Clay (15). They will be delivering medical supplies to 10 villages. Bryan and his family will show photos and talk about their experience in international service. In the past, Rotary has helped sponsor a Lake Park Lutheran Tanzania water project.
