Ottomon teachers and students are the very happy recipients of a Rotary Literacy Grant. Orangevale Rotary was awarded a $2000 grant to purchase sets of leveled readers for the school library.  Since the arrival of the books in October, the children have enjoyed reading the creative stories and varied topics of the many colorful books.

In addition to the new readers, seven Orangevale Rotarians have volunteered to tutor 1 hour a week in either reading or math.  Ann Hively, a retired French teacher from Casa Roble High School, looks forward to working with students in Lynn Haglund’s class every Monday morning. Working with individual students who are struggling with reading and writing has been a challenging but very rewarding experience.

Rotarians Lorie Rheams, Bob Kurtz, Michael Shay and Ann Hively recently had the pleasure of meeting the 3rd grade classs of  teacher, Debbie Stack, in the library and watching the excited children pick out a new book to read. “I love to read!” “Reading is my hobby!” “I read every night!” were some of the enthusiastic comments by the students.

Orangevale Rotary’s Literacy Grant is a gift that will keep on giving!
