Walk of Honor

Posted by Wona Miniati on Oct 01, 2018
We are so humbled and grateful to the community for joining us this past Sunday. The Walk of Honor flag dedication and ceremony brought us all together to honor local Gold Star Mothers and veterans.

The original Gold Star Mother’s Day was proclaimed in 1936, named after the gold star that families hung in their windows in honor of the deceased veteran. Gold Star Mother’s Day is observed on the last Sunday of September each year. It is a day to recognize and honor families who have lost a son or daughter in the service of our country.

“They say a man dies twice - first, when he takes his final breath, and second, when he and his deeds are forgotten,” said Patty Schumacher, Gold Star Mother who spoke at the event. “We must never forget all the brave men and women who have stepped up to serve our Country. Each and every one of them have given something of themselves -- All Gave Some. There are significantly fewer who gave more. They gave their last breath for our Country, for what they were asked to do for her and for what she stands for -- Some Gave All. It is easy to say we won't forget. However in the end, most do forget. It is important to have memorials such as this to help us remember that those who serve, fight and die in conflicts around the world are our brothers and sisters, sons and daughters, moms and dads; they are our neighbors. It is the least we can do in honoring who these true heroes are. Say their names; remember their deeds.”

Patty Schumacher’s son Lance Corporal Victor Dew, USMC, graduated from Granite Bay High School in 2008. He was killed in action October 13, 2010, while serving in Afghanistan.

The Walk of Honor memorial consists of the American flag and 5 service flags representing each branch of the armed services. These flags now fly proudly on the corner of Douglas and Barton at Granite Bay Park, serving as an impactful reminder to the community of the freedoms we enjoy thanks to the sacrifices made by our armed forces.

We extend heartfelt gratitude to Kathy Dusart from Doves of White, who generously donated her time and 24 doves for a very special dove release at the end of the ceremony. We're also grateful for the refreshments provided by Kelli's Cookies For Goodness Bakes, Bill's Donuts, and Starbucks.

Wine Social at Vin Uva

Posted by Wona Miniati on Aug 20, 2018
For our August social, we enjoyed a fantastic wine tasting event at Vin Uva, a local tasting room for Mount St Joseph Wines. Their grapes are grown on the property of Mount St Joseph in Loomis, providing income to support their seminary and youth service missions. The vibrant guru behind this local winery is Peter Story (pictured in the middle of our group), former owner and winemaker at St Helena Winery in Napa. Peter kept us captivated with a highly entertaining and educational presentation. How fortunate we are to have access to Napa-quality wine right in our back yard! Peter's blog is also a great read, offering a peek into his journey developing these wines. We all thoroughly enjoyed the wine, company, and learning so much from Peter. If you haven't visited Vin Uva, you're missing out! They offer tastings Thursdays-Sundays.

Now for a fun fact. Do you see that shiny medallion around Peter's neck? No that's not an ashtray. We learned it's called a tastevin (pronounced "Taht-vahN"), French for “taste wine”, and you may have seen them worn by sommeliers in fancy restaurants. The tastevin was originally designed for winemakers tasting in candle-lit cellars. The shiny tastevin reflected light, making it easier to check the color and clarity of a wine. Now that we have electricity, tastevins are no longer necessary, but many wine enthusiasts love owning a little bit of history in a tastevin.

Many thanks to Howard Dutra for setting up this special event!

Road Cleanup July 2018

Posted by Howard Dutra on Aug 01, 2018
Granite Bay Rotary Club meets once a quarter at the corner of Auburn-Folsom Road and Douglas to help keep our community beautiful. As a participant in the adopt-a-highway program, the club has adopted the section of Douglas Road that stretches from Auburn-Folsom Road to the State Park entrance at Folsom lake. Here we are at our July cleanup event, with smiles on our faces picking up trash that had accumulated along the roadway. Look at those bags filled with trash!
After clean-up, we went to Susie’s Country Café for breakfast and fellowship. Our next clean-up is scheduled for Saturday, October 27th, at 8:30 am. Please join us!

Re-Cap of Our November 3rd and Recent Meetings

Hello All,

These notes will cover our November 3rd, 2017 meeting and a few highlights of a recent meeting.

Our November 3rd meeting was again well attended and presided over by President John Milburn. It was great to see fellow Rotarian Randy Wilson at our meeting. Visitor Leilani Fratis (see photo below of John and Leilani), CEO of Placer County SPCA and fellow Rotarian, gave us a very informative presentation about their new facilities and their role in our community.

The $2500 check was signed and is on its way to District 5130 for Fire destruction relief for the Napa, Sonoma, and Santa Rosa regions.

John Milburn showed a video that was e-mail to him showing the volunteer work of the Feed My Starving Children group.

Jack May reported that Parks and Recreation has approved our Flag project.

Pat Hassna announced that our social will again be on the 3rd Wednesday of the month which is November 15th at 5:30pm at The Yard House in The Fountains in Roseville.

A road cleanup is scheduled to meet at 8:00am this Saturday the 11th at 8:00am at the small strip mall on the South side of Douglas Blvd. just past Auburn Folsom Road. Coffee and donuts will be provided by Howard Dutra who is organizing the 'outing'. Please make this a successful event and help demonstrate our commitment to the community. It only takes about an hour from start to finish.

A successful Braggs and Fines was once again conducted by Mike Calvert and Al Savory who continued to add to the 'Pot' by using their innate skills to keenly identifying members that 'willingly' contribute in a fun and enjoyable way.

Frank Ali had the winning ticket for the 'Pot' but ultimately failed to draw the Ace of Spades.

Our October 27th meeting -  was highlighted by a visit by our incoming exchange student Rachel (right in photo below). A very outgoing, intelligent, and interesting young lady from Switzerland. Also visiting was Christine Grau (left in photo below) from the Roseville Club who is working toward her Blue Badge by visiting another Club.

Our own Mike Calvert did and excellent very informative presentation on his recent drive vacation through portions of Europe.

Until next time.....................

Notes of Our Regular Meeting on August 25th 2017

Good afternoon All,

Our meeting on Friday was opened precisely on time by our President John Milburn. We had outstanding attendance for a Summer month!

Guests were announced and included Glenn Fong and his guests from Honolulu including past Presidents from District 5000 in Hawaii Laura Steelquist and Del Green (our Club is so fun, stimulating, and interesting that we have guests flying thousands of miles just for a glimpse). Roger Lynn from the Roseville Club was also visiting. Tom Cicchini introduced our guest speaker Mr. Steve Snyder a director from Rotary International and his wife Sharon.

Announcements began by our President John Milburn by explaining that our Club will be dark on September 1st and 8th. The former due to the Labor Day weekend and the latter due to our Club visiting Folsom Prison for our annual culling of members telling bad jokes.....just teasing!.........ALL jokes are appreciated at our Club.....just ask our past President.  However the Folsom Prison tour is an event to remember if you have not had the chance to 'attend'. One member who did attend the last prison tour expressed his 'joy' of going as "I'll never do that again!!"

Announcements continued with past President Bill Keegan explaining the Rotary Foundation and donations. Jack May discussed the Flag Project at the corner of Douglas and Barton and it's design (see photo below) and possible completion date. Jack also explained the upcoming membership contest and associated teams to compete with one another. As Jack mentioned "New membership is the Lifeblood of the Club".

In the middle of announcements, feed-back problems with the speaker microphone at the lecturn arose but thanks to the quick response and unbelievable technical expertise of our President John that issue was resolved and calm again returned to the room!

Another announcement was that from this point forward we must enter the front door of The Cattlemans Restaurant.

Our own Frank Ali will again be playing with his band 'Hey Monkey'.....this time at West House Tavern in Roseville at 8:00pm on the 26th. Don't miss Frank and his group if you get a chance......he is a sight to behold! (See photo below)

Our next Social event was announced by Pat Hassna and will be on September 20th at 5:30pm at Bar 101 Eats & Drinks in Roseville.

Braggs & Fines were adeptly administered by Mike Calvert and Al Savery as they continued their Robin-Hoodesq roles of helping people 'donate' to the Club in a fun and social manner.

Our guest speaker and Rotary International Director Mr. Steve Snyder (see photo below) finished our meeting by giving us an outstanding presentation of the inner workings of Rotary International with a focus on membership.

Til we meet again...........

Notes of Our Regular Meeting on August 11, 2017

This photo contains a rare opportunity to capture both our opening and closing speakers!  Hint.....the individual with the slightly balding scalp was not the one who spent last year in Belgium.  Please see more explanation below............
Our meeting was opened with all the dignity and respect our club members could muster for a substitute president.....in this case Mr. Richard Krupp standing in for the noticeably absent but esteemed and honorable Mr. John Milburn.

Richard opened with the Pledge of Allegiance and Four Way Test. Guests were then introduced and included Brenna McDuffy (photo above) who was our exchange student just returning from a year in Belgium. Also present was Keaton Dougherty who is our outgoing student to Belgium. Dennis May also introduced his daughter Janell and her current 15 year old exchange student from Marseille, France. Not to digress from the meeting notes but we sometimes wonder why our children in the States maybe aren't as sufficiently educated as compared to other children in the world.......well this young lady from Marseille told me that public school for her is 6 days per week from 9:00am until 6:00pm. That could be one reason why!

Our own Erika Halwachs was warmly welcomed back after her unplanned 'vacation' away from the Club. Erika was reminded that in the future she must get club approval prior to such 'outings'.....even if it does involve hospital stays!

Announcements were made regarding upcoming 'outings' and social events for the club in general. This included the upcoming tour on September 8th of Folsom Prison by 15 of our 'luckiest' Club members. All 15 have been appropriately screened to make sure none of them plays a mission critical role for the Club............just in case things go south in Cell Block H during the tour. Also on tap is a social this Saturday evening the 12th 9:00pm at Jan's Lounge in Orangevale to watch one of our own and his band Hey Monkey play for their peeps. All Groupies and Roadies are welcome as well as all Club members. The photo, immediately below, shows the Club member involved in this very public display just before authorities were notified! The Club member's name will not be reported here until his and John Belushi's next-of-kin have all been notified.
Our normally scheduled monthly social for the 3rd Wednesday of every month was announced by the always impeccably dressed cruise director Pat Hassna. It will be held this Wednesday the 16th at 5:30pm at La Fiesta restaurant next to Mikuni's in Roseville.

With much fanfare Braggs & Fines was administered by our own past President Al Savery.  Fortunately Al didn't indulge in any of his always (??????) witty (?????) and hilarious (??????) jokes but he was very productive with his Fines with revenue collection for the Club reaching an all-time high. At least ten individuals were relieved of 'excess' cash by our own in-house Robin Hood.

As usual, our sumptuous meal provided by The Cattleman's restaurant was impeccable.

Concluding our meeting was speaker Brenna McDuffy (photo at top of this page). She was outstanding with her very interesting PowerPoint photo presentation to us about her exchange student year in Belgium. We could not have chosen a better emissary for our Club!!

In addition, we need all the Clubrunner hits on Google we can get.

Ray Jones had some great Mexican fishing stories to share.  He caught a 170b Marlin and placed 3rd in the competition.   We were pleased to learn that Pat Hassna will continue organizing the Rotary socials in the upcoming year.  Stay tuned for July  location.

There will be almost $600 for the cross over partying drawing.  We will keep drawing until someone wins.

I am so out of here....

Meeting Notes 12/9/16

Congratulations to Rich and Linda Settle on celebrating their ninth anniversary.

Bill Keegan gave us an update on Rotary Foundation contributions, $4,500 so far.  Bill reminds us that it is easy to make the checking account or credit cards auto deduction and could go a long way to get us to 100% club participation in the Foundation.

Jeff Johns is having major back surgery this week.  Best wishes to Jeff on a speedy recovery.

Mike Calvert did a big Porsche road trip down 395, across Death Valley into Las Vegas, then on to Boulder Dam, Grand Canyon, Sedona and Mesa, AZ.   For a former law enforcement agent, sounds like he broke a lot a speed limits.

Susan McAdams shared her biography with the club this week.  Exciting news about the upcoming new addition to her family which will occur in April 2017.  Susan enjoys contributing her time and dentist skills on her medical trips to Mexico.

Also a reminder on the Crab Feed...less than two months away now! Please be selling those tickets, and send updates to Jason Currier at Jason.currier@safecu.org, or 916-201-8114.  Also, if you are having trouble getting tickets sold, or think you can sell more tickets than what you were already issued, please contact him right away so that we can work on getting those redistributed. Meeting Notes 12/2/16

We have some great activities happening this month and coming up...

--Jim Lane is organizing the canned food drive.  He was looking for help with dollies and/or trucks to help move the cans on Friday afternoon, so hopefully he received a good showing for that.  We'll be anxious to hear about that endeavor at the next meeting!  The basket organizing will be next week, and if you'd like to donate please get in touch with Jim.

--Leighton Koberlein announced that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Granite Bay hosted nearly 500 nativity scenes this past weekend.  They also had local choirs performing.

--President Al gave some details on the Feed the Homeless event on Monday.

--Our Christmas party is this upcoming Saturday, 12/10, at Bill Keegan's house.  An RSVP sheet was passed around the club at the meeting, so if you missed it and would like to RSVP please contact President Al. Look forward to celebrating the holiday season there with all club members!

--Our Crab Feed is coming up on Feb 11th, please make sure you're selling tickets (event and raffle) and getting the word out! We have 2 trips to Hawaii in the raffle, so that's a great incentive!! For ticket updates please contact Jason Currier at Jason.currier@safecu.org or 916-201-8114. Jack May would also like to make sure that everyone is looking out for Crab Feed sponsors.  He passed out sponsorship flyers at the meeting, so if you have potential sponsors please contact Jack.

We had Deborah Getz from the Never Forget Our Fallen organization visiting, and she said a few words about her history with the program and its support for local Military families. They have their annual Christmas party coming up on Dec 17th, and donations are welcomed.  You can donate unwrapped toys for the kids, or make a monetary donation (please get them to Dick Gootee to deliver before the event).  You can find more details at www.neverforgetourfallen.com, or contact Deborah at 916-223-6816.

We extended our condolences to Rich Settle, who's father passed away at the Granite Bay Eskaton last week. He expressed his gratitude for the all the support club members have shown.

We welcomed back Jeff Johns, Roger Burke, and Erika Halwachs.  We were glad to see them all at the club meeting this week!

Our speaker this week was Jenny Roberts from the American Heart Association. She gave a terrific presentation on the importance of CPR and how it make the difference between life and death.  We also had a great demo from a couple of our own club members, attempting to resuscitate Jenny's CPR dummies.  We were thankful no actual CPR was needed after the demo!

Meeting Notes 11/18/16

Bill Keegan, Foundation Chair gave an overview and supporting documents on various ways to contribute & participate in the Rotary Foundation.  A number of members completed the contribution form at the meeting or submitted a check.

Also, Dennis May’s guest and prospective member Terry and Fabio our exchange student from Austria.  As they always do,   Cattlemen’s did a good job handling our group.

The next The Gathering Inn event is Sept. 27 at the 1st Methodist Church at Brace & Barton Road.  Time: 4:45.   Please let Erika Halwachs know if you can volunteer, so she will know her head count.

Ray Jones had plenty to tell us today. Including a cool canoe trip he & his family took down the Missouri River, following the Lewis and Clark journey.  He was sounding like the program for a while.  Tom Gibbs came out of retirement and was our fine master raking in the big bucks.   Hoping to get lucky with an old girl friend or two, Tom is off to his 50th high school reunion next week in upper New York State.

Bob Smith filled us in on his other passion outside of Rotary, his volunteer work with the Placer SPCA and the money they raise from recycling.
