Dupre and Hodges Elementary Literacy
Metro Rotary's emphasis on supporting early literacy began at Bayless Elementary School in 1996 with Rotary Readers. The program offered books and mentoring in reading skills to third- and fourth-grade students by Metro members and community partners. Soon after, the program moved to Dupre Elementary. Today, rather than focusing on a few students, Rotary Readers benefits the entire school body by providing new books for the campus library. Metro funds the purchase of titles chosen by the school librarian, and the books arrive already library-bound and barcoded. Each week, Metro asks that day's program presenter to autograph one of the new books, which is then presented to the Dupre Library in the speaker's honor. Through this initiative, the Dupre Library receives 50 new books each year.
In Fall 2019, Metro Rotary began partnering with Greater Southwest Lubbock Rotary Club on early literacy support for Hodges Elementary School. One member from each club volunteers to spend time once a week with school-selected students who may benefit from extra attention devoted to reading skills.
