Our speaker last week wasMeghalee Das from Assam, India: "A User-Centered Approach to Teaching International Students on Online Platforms." She studies the impact of bringing people who have different levels of language and technology skills together. She pointed out that international students studying in the US is at an all-time high, and the user-experience gives insight into studying how to discover behaviors and user needs. See, say, do. The applications are wide, including real estate, sports, medicine, etc., using any document or website or software or process. User-Experience (UX) records video, even through eye-tracking, and analyzes it. Research methods include data analysis, observations, self-reporting, designer analysis, and user/use diagrams in order to use software to represent the user ecology. Megahalee reported on a study she is doing, with international students, and how the pandemic has required work-arounds due to social distancing. She raised important questions for us, communicating at a distance, especially with people outside our organization or within other cultures; for instance, is interrupting rude? Does culture impact hesitancy in speaking? How does the technology impact communication? Does the "low" or "high" context culture impact our conversations? What if English is not the first language and the meeting is in English? She recommends "glocalized" learning solutions, connecting global and local interests. She recommends looking beyond written assignments; use visual, use audio, as well, in meetings and trainings. video...
Meghalee mentioned Hofstede, an intercultural communication researcher, as well. Compare two or more cultures at https://www.hofstede-insights.com/product/compare-countries to see generalizeable cultural value differences between countries. A fascinating website.
