Our next "classification" talks are scheduled 8/28. Want to offer one? Or do you have another speaker in mind? Let me know!

I still chuckle at a recent Peanuts cartoon in our Lubbock AJ. Snoopy was astraddle his dog house typing out a novel:
  • She was distraught at how often she was alone while he was away on business.
  • He responded he'd bought her a St. Bernard named Great Reluctance.
  • He told her "when I go away, you shall know I am leaving you with Great Reluctance."
  • She hit him with a waffle iron.

____ Last Week's Program_________

Program

Our program last week was presented by executive director Christy Reeves of Lubbock Habitat for Humanity. Habitat is a Christian-based nonprofit whose goal is to build at least six homes each year. Prospective home owners are helped through Habitat's prudent training which provides financial management teaching and integration of homeowner sweat equity to lower the cash needed for ownership. Habitat's current work in East Lubbock brings new neighborhoods, committed to beautification by planting trees, building a lovely walking track, constructing a courtyard community with space for essential businesses, and an increased ownership of safety.

When Christy reminded us of ReStore Lubbock, where building materials, tools, and gently used appliances and furniture are available for sale to support Habitat work, frequent guest Curt McClure graciously donated a dishwasher from his new Lubbock abode.
  • Service: Thanks, Metrotarians, for service every week leading in the pledge, prayer, 4-way test, MOW delivery, and more!
  • Guests: We were joined by Kathy Smith, Curt McClure, Dennis Jack, Diana Johnansen-Jack, and James Dugger.
  • Brags: Greg bragged on receiving a Happy Birthday song from club members. Ingrid bragged on how many club members have purchased yard signs (still a few left!). Jamel celebrated his 10th wedding anniversary. Ken bragged on our very active Mighty Metro Movers, on Dan helping with the MOW schedule, and on Elyn for her improving health. Wayne bragged on JohnN for his earning a Purple Heart award. Susan noted Jennifer Jones, the next president of our organization, is also the first female RI President.

Board Meetings
Our board met 8/11. A few noteables:
  • Treasurer Joy reports the club is in good financial standing.
  • We're in regular contact with Holiday Inn South to see when they can host us. We'll check quarter by quarter.
  • We have renewed ClubRunner.
  • SarahLee and Susan are coordinating the use of our Zoom account.
  • MOW mowing and Dupre books service projects are active.
  • Working on a fundraiser idea in lieu of Oktoberfest this year. Additional ideas solicited and welcomed.
  • The board has reviewed new member applications and has sent applications to be reviewed by our members. Email Rich with any concerns before 8/18 so that we can move forward with applications.
  • We need ideas for our district grant project(s). Due 8/31. Email Rich with your ideas.

___ August 14th Program___________

Our program this Friday is Tim Collins from Buddy Holly Hall. Tim is the chairman of the Lubbock Entertainment Performing Arts Association (LEPAA). He has been working tirelessly on the project, even dealing with COVID-19 construction-related setbacks. Tim is owner of Collins Title, LLC, and has a unique vision of the revitalization of downtown Lubbock. He is also a Board member and past Chairman for the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce. more...

  • Talking to Strangers: What We Should Know About the People We Don't Know Looking for a good book to listen to? Might check out Talking to Strangers: What We Should Know About the People We Don't Know by Malcolm Gladwell. From the description: "Something is very wrong, Gladwell argues, with the tools and strategies we use to make sense of people we don't know. And because we don't know how to talk to strangers, we are inviting conflict and misunderstanding in ways that have a profound effect on our lives and our world."
