November 1, 1957:    Seven leading Spenard businessmen meet to learn about Rotary.

 

January 7, 1958:  The Rotary Club of Spenard is admitted to Rotary International with 23 members.

 

March-April, 1964:   Members work round-the-clock to assist displaced earthquake survivors in Turnagain and later fly to Seward to help other communities.

 

1970-1984:   Spenard Rotary organizes six new clubs:

         1970 -Anchorage East Rotary Club

 (Joint project with Anchorage Rotary Club)

         1977 - Wasilla Sunrise Rotary Club

         1978 - EagleRiver Rotary Club

         1979 - Rotary Club of Anchorage South

         1979 - Soldotna Rotary Club

         1984 - AnchorageHillside Rotary Club

 

1972-1973:   Club, spearheaded by Forest Hayden, initiates the District's first youth exchange program

 

1983-1984:   Name changed to Anchorage International Rotary Club

 

1987:   First female member inducted into club: Esther Combs, Classification - Native Corporation.

 

1992-1993:    Past President Jim Sutherland becomes DG of the largest Rotary District in the world.

 

1993-1994: Club makes the incoming president responsible for raising funds for his/her term of office; initiates the Read-to-Me Program at North Star Elementary School

 

1994-1995:  Joan Tolstrup becomes the club's first female president.
