Alaska Geographic Presentation
Jul. 15, 2022
Alaska accounts for two-thirds of the United States’ national parklands, about 80 percent of wildlife refuges, 70 million acres of BLM conservation lands; and is home to the two largest national forests. And Alaska Geographic is the official education and fundraising partner of these public lands. With support of over 12,000 members and donors over six decades, we’ve helped millions of visitors better understand and explore Alaska’s iconic places; alongside raising tens of millions of dollars to fund education, arts, and stewardship projects.
In our 30+ retail stores throughout Alaska, we work with local and national vendors to curate informative and commemorative products that extend the educational mission of Alaska’s lands and oceans. Our themed stores provide meaningful remembrances of a visit and generate revenue to support interpretive initiatives for each park, refuge, and conservation land. Percentages of sales from each purchase goes directly back to Alaska's public lands.
On top of retail, we also have a high focus on outdoor education in Alaska's public lands. Each year, we take both high school students and teachers into the waters of the Prince William Sound for kayaking and stewardship expeditions. While on these excursions, teachers are accredited through the University of Anchorage Alaska in order to bring new sensory skills into the classroom based on their surroundings both on water and land.
Together, we deliver programs for youth and adults, build community collaboration, create exceptional films and publications, and fund critical projects that serve both people and these places. By supporting our work, you also inspire a whole new generation of explorers in your favorite places.
From a student that attended one of our backpacking trips:
"I learned a lot from this course and it made me to be confident about myself. I learned how leadership works and that communication in your group is important. I also learned how to look out for one another, respect differences, and how to work things out if there's an issue. I am so grateful to Alaska Geographic and NOLS for their Gateway program for this opportunity and I hope others like me get the chance to experience this beautiful places I've been”

Come join us for a quick Halloween event for the kids at AK Child and Family. Trick or Treaters stay in one spot and the treats drive by. The students residing at AK Child & Family are unable to trick or treat in the community for Halloween. AK Child & Family staff invite you to Trunk or Treat with our students on 10/28/22 after our club meeting. AK Child & Family employees will be decorating their vehicles as there will be a contest for the best trunk and you could win too! Vehicles do not have to be decorated, you may simply hand out treats or fun little items. DJ Shari is said to have picked out her costume and will have spooky music playing. Speaking of spooky. Please make sure items given to students can be in their rooms and isn’t a safety hazard. The kids love Mardi Gras beads, pencils, candy, pens, stickers, sun glasses, plastic rings, bracelets, candy, magic games, candy, mini games, more candy and book markers. The foster youth have also been invited so we may have up to 60 youth come through. Leftovers will be shared with those who do not attend.

Postponed, standby for new date. Brig Gen Tony Stratton has generously offered us a behind the scenes look at the 176th WG. We'll be getting mission briefs and walkthroughs of thier aircraft, equipment, and facilities. We'll need to know exactly who is going ahead of time because we'll have to obtain base access. Ask Jay for details. |
