Reminders & Updates

Welcome to an Exciting new Year!

HOST SCHEDULE

·      February 3 – Club Social at The Air Condition Lounge 5pm – 7pm

San Diego Chamber breakfast mixer – we are working with the Chamber to host a breakfast mixer in early May. Stay tuned for details. Once the date is set, we will need 2 – 3 people to help plan. It will be simple

Project w/ Sharia’s Closet – Sharia’s Closet has reached out to see if we would like to do a group project and help them pack Bags of Hope. I have spoken with their representative, and we have a couple of options. The service option I feel is best for our club will be onsite at Sharia’s Closet helping them put outfits together for clients who have requested help from their organization and packing the clothes into bags. If we participate on a Sunday morning, we can be there when the store is closed and be indoors having a great time helping out.

Please let me know if you are interested in this opportunity. We need approximately 7 – 10 people. Family members are welcome – susanjosephson@oldmissionrotary.org .

Epic Day of Service – The official day is May 3 however we are welcome to have our day of service anytime in the month of May. Project Ideas are welcome. We can do our own project or partner with another club or join District activities.

YOUR PRESIDENT,

SUSAN JOSEPHSON

Old Mission Rotary Club Social!

There will be no afternoon club meeting at the YMCA on February 3. Instead, we will have a club social at The Air Conditioned Lounge from 5pm – 7pm.

This is a relaxed, come-as-you-are evening—great conversation, friendly people, and a quick look at what our club has been working on. If you’re someone who cares about community, service, and building meaningful relationships with other people who do too, you’ll fit right in.

What you can expect:

  • A quick club update: where we are, what’s coming up, and how members are getting involved

  • A snapshot of our humanitarian work and local impact

  • A brief update on Thousand Smiles Foundation and the difference it continues to make

  • What’s happening with the Art Pratt Foundation, including a recap of recent grants supporting organizations across San Diego—from helping single homeless moms, to supporting survivors of sex trafficking, to programs serving distressed communities

  • How we help young people level up through scholarships and mentorship

Whether you’re brand new to Rotary, curious about the club, or just want to reconnect with members and hear the latest, we’d love to have you.

On Tuesday, January 27th, Old Mission Rotary hosted the first round of the District 5340 Four Way Test Speech Contest

On Tuesday, January 27th, Old Mission Rotary hosted the first round of the District 5340 Four Way Test Speech Contest. As is our club's tradition the competition was made up of students from the Reality Changers program.

Reality Changers prepares youth to become first-generation college graduates and agents of change in their communities. Steve Nuñez served as our master of ceremonies and our club judges were Don Krupp, Aryanna Edwards and Cesar Cervantes.
We had five contestants (first names only) from five different public schools:
-Sumaya discussed the challenges facing young immigrants. She related her years long struggle to learn English and adopt to her new culture. Her advice was to never give up!
-Chase is a sophomore at La Jolla High School and promoted the idea that we should all slow down or even stop to reevaluate our goals before charging ahead in life.  His example was how a football injury forced him to rest and recover before returning to the grid iron allowing him to realize the importance of academics.
-Cupid is a Junior at Gompers Preparatory Academy (public charter school) and talked about how debilitating anxiety can be. As a young girl she struggled with fear and was shy and reserved but has worked with help to become more confident and outgoing.
-Emeroth discussed the challenges facing youth facing anxiety, fear and worry. Asking for help was her first important first step to overcome these issues.
- Ivanna discussed the alarming trend that incoming college freshmen are not prepared in math and reading when they arrive on campus. College bound students must be made aware early to take advantage of tutors and mentors in programs at school and other organizations such as Reality Changers.

Each of the five students delivered insightful and sincere talks and our club judges were hard pressed to select a winner.  Emeroth will go on to participate in the next level of the Rotary District 5340 contest.

Reality Changers was represented by Ashley Morgan (Senior Vice President), Dwayne Wiggins, Jr. (College Town Program Manager) and Achievement Coaches Jade Gil Montesinos and Tya Valentine. The program gives students an opportunity to become the first in their families to attend college and provides a positive culture in inner city neighborhoods. Old Mission
Rotary has worked with Reality Changers since 2004 and has sponsored the Four Way Test Speech Contest since 2011. Several of our club members have served as tutors and mentors.

WAPI stands for Water Pasteurization Indicator

Luis Caranza District Gov. was there. Marge was there from the evening club. I was there, Representing Old Mission Rotary. The nice young girl who is sitting putting together the WAPI is Mikayla.  She is an interactor. Senior in High School.

WAPI stands for Water Pasteurization Indicator. A WAPI is small plastic tube with a bit of wax inside. When water reaches pasteurization temperature, which is about 149°F, the wax melts and falls to the bottom.  Pasteurization kills harmful bacteria, so once the wax melts, the water is safe to drink without needing to boil it. WAPIs help families in resource-limited areas access clean water more efficiently while also saving fuel and time.

During the event, volunteers assemble and test WAPIs that are later sent to communities around the world. Last year, nearly 900 WAPIs were made and shipped to Kenya and Chad with the help of Roger Haines. This year, the goal is to make and test 1,000 WAPIs. No experience is required, and all materials and instructions are provided.  The project is funded through a district grant and through UCSD Rotaract’s fundraising. It supports Rotary’s focus on clean water and sanitation and gives volunteers a direct
way to contribute to global health and sustainability.

The WAPI Project is also a great chance to meet people from across our broader community. More than 50 Rotary clubs are invited, along with all seven Rotaract clubs in the district and many Interact clubs. Students, professionals, and volunteers work together for a meaningful, hands-on service experience.
