YMCA of San Diego County Overnight Camps

Jamie Cosson, Executive Director gave us a great presentation on YMCA's Over Night Camps.

The YMCA of San Diego County offers several camp experiences where every child can build confidence and make new friends in a safe and nurturing environment. From horseback riding in Julian to surfing in Imperial Beach, each of these camps have something special to offer the young adventurer in your life.  The YMCA's Overnight Camps program is a recipient of Old Mission Rotary's Art Pratt Foundation.

District Governor's Dinner June 7, 2025

On Saturday, June 7th our Rotary District 5340 celebrated the new Rotary year at the traditional annual District Governor's Dinner. Some 500 Rotarians attended the event to thank our outgoing DG Dianne Crawford and welcome our new district leader Luis Carranza.

Old Mission Rotary was represented by outgoing president Bob Chalfa, 2024-2025 and his wife Gloria as well as our new club president Susan Josephson, 2025-2026 and president elect Cesar Cervantes, 2026-2027.  At the event, Susan was officially sworn in as President for the new Rotary year that officially begins on July 1st.

Photo: 2025-2026 President Susan Josephson has prepared an action plan for our club called “All Hands on Deck.” Much of our plan came from several strategic planning sessions conducted by District Governor Dianne Crawford to help us focus on growing Old Mission Rotary.

Since 2001, Doors of Change has been transforming the lives of homeless youth

Members of our club will remember Doors of Change as a homeless youth advocacy group operating in pre-covid Ocean Beach.  Thanks to Vicki Yates our club volunteered to cook and serve several Sunday afternoon meals to grateful homeless kids. Donna Maytum was the “Crockpot Queen” organizing a lot of meal prep and service.

Since 2001, Doors of Change has been transforming the lives of homeless youth in San Diego County, one young person at a time.  For more than 23 years they have helped over 2,900 homeless youth get off the streets into shelters, permanent housing, and they have provided other forms of support for long-term self-sustainability.

Since starting a Homeless Youth Advocacy Program in 2021, they have helped over 849 youth find shelter and safe housing!

Our membership was very impressed by a presentation by Program Director Joanne Newgard and Executive Fundraiser Annie Arditti. Doors of Change connects the homeless with community organizations offering healthcare (MEDICAL), Food Assistance (EBT), cell phones, housing, transportation passes and many other resources.

Dave Blum Joined Rotary in October of 1978
and is now an Honorary Member of the club. Dave was an active member for decades and is once again helping the club with our Talent Show Gala staging. Dave brought lots of energy, a cheerful personality and a sparkling wit to the club.

Stan Vogelsang credits Dave with getting him to join the club back in 1995. Stan was interested in Rotary and had visited the club three times and was ignored at each meeting until Dave introduced himself and made him feel welcome. One act of friendship was all it took!

President Bob On "The Rotary Foundation"
Susan, Don and I went to the District Training Event yesterday.  One of the things they covered was prerequisites for receiving Global Grants. One that needs our attention now is the minimum $100.00 average annual donation from our club members to The Rotary Foundation.

We are short of that and need to achieve the minimum before the end of this Rotary year (June 30, 2025), or we will not qualify for Global Grants during the coming year.  Anything you can donate will help. At least $100 is recommended but if you can't or don't want to do that even $10 or $20 will bring us closer to the minimum.  You can make the donation direct by going to:

or give a payment to Aryanna at the club meeting.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

The "Click Me!" button below will take you to the donation page on rotary.org site.

Hope to see you on Tuesday. We will be having a Club Assembly where you can share your vision and hopes for the future of our Club.

Thanks,

Bob
