Reminders & Updates

Welcome to an Exciting new Year!

HOST SCHEDULE

·      February 3 – Club Social at The Air Condition Lounge 5pm – 7pm

San Diego Chamber breakfast mixer – we are working with the Chamber to host a breakfast mixer in early May. Stay tuned for details. Once the date is set, we will need 2 – 3 people to help plan. It will be simple

Project w/ Sharia’s Closet – Sharia’s Closet has reached out to see if we would like to do a group project and help them pack Bags of Hope. I have spoken with their representative, and we have a couple of options. The service option I feel is best for our club will be onsite at Sharia’s Closet helping them put outfits together for clients who have requested help from their organization and packing the clothes into bags. If we participate on a Sunday morning, we can be there when the store is closed and be indoors having a great time helping out.

Please let me know if you are interested in this opportunity. We need approximately 7 – 10 people. Family members are welcome – susanjosephson@oldmissionrotary.org .

Epic Day of Service – The official day is May 3 however we are welcome to have our day of service anytime in the month of May. Project Ideas are welcome. We can do our own project or partner with another club or join District activities.

YOUR PRESIDENT,

SUSAN JOSEPHSON

Old Mission Rotary Club Social!

There will be no afternoon club meeting at the YMCA on February 3. Instead, we will have a club social at The Air Conditioned Lounge from 5pm – 7pm.

Member Gary John has graciously opened his club to Old Mission Rotary so we can have a little casual social time together. The club will be closed to the public so we will have the run of the place : ) Old Mission Rotary will provide some snacks. If you would like to drink, they will be available for purchase.

In addition to being a CLUB SOCIAL, this is a great MEMBER RECRUITMENT opportunity. Please invite family, friends and POTENTIAL MEMBERS to come socialize with us.

RSVP to susanjosephson@oldmissionrotary.org

Address:

4673 30th Street

San Diego, CA 92116

Prizes await the top trivia masters, so bring your A-game! Let's come together for a memorable evening filled with laughter, good drinks, and a dash of friendly rivalry.

You can sign up either as an individual or as a team of up to 4 members. Each round will include one San Diego focused question in addition to general knowledge questions. Delicious food and drinks will be available for purchase from Novo Brazil Brewing. Please arrive at 3:30pm so we can start promptly at 4:00pm. Any additional funds raised our goal will go to the Mission Valley Evening Rotary Foundation (MVE Rotary Foundation). The MVE Rotary Foundation is the grant giving arm of Mission Valley Evening Rotary which provides funds to local and international organizations.

Mission Valley Evening Rotary is a group of professionals and community members serving San Diego, CA. Our club hosts service projects and social activities, along with our monthly meetings.

Eric Benink- The Very Handy Do It Yourself Club Host

Eric Benink started his club host Who Am I with a detailed description of all of the tools and fasteners jammed into his garage.  These items ranged from drills, nails, levels, chop saws, drop lights, hammers, mauls and much more stuff that any respectable “Do It Yourself” homeowner would have.

Eric not only enjoys home improvement but also admitted that he is thrifty and hates to pay to have work done that he can do. he learned many of his skills from his father.

Over the decades, Eric has improved two separate older family homes. Simpler projects included popcorn ceiling removal, painting, tiling, installing hardwood floors, lighting, removing wooden wall paneling, dry wall and replacing interior doors.

Outdoor projects included drainage lines, a BBQ installation and a very impressive outdoor shade structure.

More intense efforts were a kitchen remodel, a deck replacement and a very challenging bathroom remodel. The most frustrating project was installing a staircase and the most physically demanding was jack hammering concrete.

Perhaps when Eric retires from his career in law, he will offer his services to club members as a handyman!

Economic Education The San Diego Center for Economic Education at Cuyamaca College

The San Diego Council on Economics Education (SDCEE) works to assist K-12 teachers to educate their students in economic ways of thinking and problem solving. The goal is to help students utilize these skills in lives as consumers, investors, entrepreneurs, citizens and members of the workforce.

The director of the program is Anthony Zambelli, MEcon, JD who is a professor Emeritus at Cuyamaca College. Our club program included an exercise where tables split into groups to discuss various aspects of money and finances that apply to K-12 students.

Dr. Zambelli travels around the county presenting his program to schools and is always looking for volunteers.

Mama's Kitchen- Grant from the Art Pratt Foundation of Old Mission Rotary

Type caption hereMama’s Kitchen strives to provide nutritional support to San Diego residents at risk of malnutrition due to critical illnesses such as HIV, cancer, congestive heart failure, type 2 diabetes, and chronic kidney disease. Together with hundreds of volunteers, businesses, and community supporters, Mama’s Kitchen strives to help our clients stay healthy, preserve their dignity, and keep their families together by providing, medically tailored home-delivered meals and nutrition education – all at no cost to the clients.

Mama’s Kitchen was established in 1990 by a San Diego caregiver who was deeply concerned about her neighbors affected by the AIDS epidemic. Since then, they have delivered over 900,000 meals  and now provide 17,000 meals a week.

There are two wonderful and very popular annual fund raising events for Mama's Kitchen. Mama's Day Gala is scheduled for May 26th and is described as the city's premier tasting event. Mama's Pies is San Diego's largest annual bake sale and orders can be placed from mid October to the Friday before Thanksgiving. Each $35 pie sold provides 12 meals to a San Diegan in need.

Eva Matthews is the Executive Officer of Mama's Kitchen and accepted a grant for $5000 to support installation of new refrigeration and freezer units.
