As If They Were Angels - A Big Story of Disaster, Rescue, and Heroism, Now A Film
Jun 11, 2020 12:00 PM
This story that filmmaker Ms. Strauss will discuss is a very compelling and somewhat unknown, both tragic and inspirational, incident that happened on February 18, 1942. She has shed light on what happened 78 years ago in one of the worst non-combat disasters in the history of the US Navy and just after the attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941. Ms. Strauss' dad was one of the surviving sailors out of the 186 that were rescued and where dreadfully, 203 sailors died. Her film had a great reception among film festival audiences, had three showings at the recent Mill Valley Film Festival, as well as at indie theater screenings too. "The Apollo Chronicles"
Jul 09, 2020 12:00 PM
"In celebrating the 50th anniversary of Apollo, the nation’s attention returned to the minute-to-minute missions, the brave astronauts, and the political machinery that launched the program. We can also pause to ask: How exactly did the engineers solve so many daunting problems from scratch? This presentation will crawl into Apollo’s chariot, revisiting some fascinating and lesser known engineering stories, informed by interviews with the Apollo-era engineers. Importantly, what did we learn and what are we still learning from America’s first moon missions?" |

Hitler's Greatest Gamble
Aug 06, 2020 12:00 PM
On June 22, 1941, Hitler invaded the Soviet Union in Operation Barbarossa, one of the turning points of World War II. Within six months, the invasion bogged down on the outskirts of Moscow, and the Eastern Front proved to be the decisive theater in the defeat of the Third Reich. Ever since, most historians have agreed that this was Hitler's gravest mistake. In Hitler's Great Gamble, James Ellman argues that while Barbarossa was a gamble and perverted by genocidal Nazi ideology, it was not doomed from the start. Rather it represented Hitler's best chance to achieve his war aims for Germany which were remarkably similar to those of the Kaiser's government in 1914. Other options, such as an invasion of England, or an offensive to seize the oil fields of the Middle East were considered and discarded as unlikely to lead to Axis victory.
In Ellman's recounting, Barbarossa did not fail because of flaws in the Axis invasion strategy, the size of the USSR, or the brutal cold of the Russian winter. Instead, German defeat was due to errors of Nazi diplomacy. Hitler chose not to coordinate his plans with his most militarily powerful allies, Finland and Japan, and ensure the seizure of the ports of Murmansk and Vladivostok. Had he done so, Germany might well have succeeded in defeating the Soviet Union and, perhaps, winning World War II. Drawing on a wealth of primary and secondary sources (including many recently released), Hitler's Great Gamble is a provocative work that will appeal to a wide cross-section of World War II buffs, enthusiasts, and historians. A Recovering Hedge Fund Manager. Now an author who writes about equity investment strategies and World War II history Mr. Ellman holds a bachelor’s degree in history and economics from Tufts and an MBA from Harvard University. A former hedge fund manager and field examiner for the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, he lives near San Francisco, California with his wife and two sons. |

Without Precedent: Chief Justice John Marshall and His Times
Aug 13, 2020 12:00 PM
Joel Paul will talk about WITHOUT PRECEDENT and CHIEF JUSTICE JOHN MARSHALL AND HIS TIMES and about the USSC, and the principle of Judicial Review. John Marshall was the son of a frontiersman and a cousin of Thomas Jefferson, Marshall grew up in poverty but learned to be a proud individual and was educated, allowing him to develop both his exceptional personality and intellect. When he was a young man, the American Revolution began and he volunteered as a rifleman in the 3rd Virginia Regiment, which served at the Battle of Trenton and remained with Washington at Valley Forge. Marshall went on to continue to influence America in its early days, picking up the Federalist mantle after the presidencies of George Washington and John Adams. He served as an ambassador to France, served as legal counsel for influential businessmen, and eventually ended up on the Supreme Court, which he transformedinto the august and influential body that it is today; the body that could restore the now lost Constitution. |

LEANING ON THE ARC
Sep 24, 2020 12:00 PM
Gerry Scwhartzbach, author of LEANING ON THE ARC will talk about the general theme of his book; which is the objectification of human beings. And he will provide an example or two from his most interesting career as a criminal defense attorney who mostly took cases that interested him regardless of whether it seemed the person was probably guilty as charged. His point is that we should not write people off even when the potential for redemption seems remote.
Many of his cases were intriguing and challenging and would probably have had a very different outcome if he had not done the thorough investigation that he did. Gerry is perhaps best known for successfully defending actor Robert Blake against charges he had murdered his wife.
Gerry is inspiring, and his book should be required reading for everyone desiring to work in criminal justice.

How Dry I Ain’t: Prohibition – the Ignoble Experiment that Failed
Dec 03, 2020 12:00 PM
How Dry I Ain’t: Prohibition – the Ignoble Experiment that Failed
John's presentation will be filled with fascinating bits of Bay Area history, especially on Sausalito, which was ground Zero for speakeasies and bootleggers! The year 2020 is the centennial of the beginning of the Volstead Act (1920 – 1933), the enforcement legislation of the 18 th Amendment. The Prohibition movement had its origins in the Northeast and Midwest, with very little enthusiasm in the West, and particularly in the San Francisco Bay Area. But it was the “Law of the Land,” and we had to obey its restrictions. The 13 years of Prohibition have been sensationalized, primarily because of gang violence and dramatic law enforcement methods in big cities and smaller communities in other regions of the nation. This presentation will focus on the less dramatic activities of citizens in our area, who found ways to circumvent what President Herbert Hoover called the “noble experiment” with a much more relaxed attitude.
John Freeman was born, educated and has lived his entire life in San Francisco. He has a BA in History from USF and a Master's from S.F. State University. After teaching in San Francisco public high schools for 35 years, he retired and pursued his passion for San Francisco history - in depth. He has published numerous articles in print and online and has presented in a variety of settings, including podcasts. The topic of how the Bay Area reacted to the 13 years of Prohibition has only fragmented, anecdotal pieces, which piqued his curiosity to research the topic further, with an emphasis on how Marin County dealt with this "ignoble experiment."
