Homelessness Planning in San Rafael
Feb 16, 2017
Like cities across the country, homelessness is a top priority. The City of San Rafael City Council is spearheading a variety of initiatives to address homelessness including: funding the Downtown Streets Team, creating a Mental Health Resource Officer position in our Police Department, and providing individualized paths back to housing for our most at-risk residents through the HOT team. In early 2017 the City hired a Director of Homeless Planning and Outreach to further strengthen the City's relationship with local organizations like the County of Marin's Health & Human Services, the Ritter Center, St. Vincent De Paul and Homeward Bound of Marin. To learn more about the City's efforts on this issue, please read more here. |

The Dreyfus Affair & Anti-Semitism in France
Mar 02, 2017
The Dreyfus Affair & Anti-Semitism in FranceOn a cold Paris morning in January 1895, as 20,000 people shouted, "Death to the traitor, death to the Jew," French Army Captain Alfred Dreyfus was publicly stripped of his rank for committing high treason. That the evidence against him was flimsy and fabricated did not matter; he was Jewish, and that alone was enough to sustain a gross miscarriage of justice that unraveled over a dozen years before his name was finally cleared. Join Oak Dowling to examine the trials of Captain Dreyfus and his eventual exoneration by viewing excerpts from 3 films: “Prisoner of Honor” with Richard Dreyfuss, “The Life of Emile Zola” the Academy Award winner with Paul Muni and “In Search of History-Infamous Dreyfus Affair.” In addition, investigate contemporary French Anti-Semitism with reference to the Dreyfus Affair. |

Engineering Influence Online: The War Beyond Your Browser
Mar 29, 2017
Please join us for fellowship in a social setting at the Sausalito Cruising Club, 300 Napa Street. $10 at the door, no-host bar. Guests encouraged! Mill Valley Rotary President Kent Campbell’s presentation is entitled "Engineering Influence Online: The War Beyond Your Browser." Kent will discuss how online opinion can be quietly manipulated by leveraging human nature, the realities of online commerce, and technology. In an age when people make decisions based on what they learned on the internet from strangers, various interests alter public opinion by finding traction in negativity bias, tribalism, fear, lust, self-interest, or by simply alleviating boredom. This is possible because the structure of the modern internet is perfectly suited for mass engineering of opinion. Kent is the Chief Strategist for Reputation X, an online reputation management firm based in Sausalito. His company's clients include businesses, politicians, celebrities, executives, and others who are often perfectly innocent and mostly just misunderstood. |

Humanity's Last stand - Forced Organ harvesting in China
Jul 26, 2017
How did all these happen? This talk reveals China’s large scale forced organ harvesting from prisoners of conscience, and provides the history of the investigation: how it began, caught the public attention, and has now become a prime focus internationally. With the strong bi-partisan support, U.S. Congress unanimously passed resolution H.R. 343 in June 2016, expressing serious concerns about the on-going large scale forced organ harvesting from prisoners of conscience in China. European Congress passed a resolution in Dec. 2013, urging the Chinese government to stop this brutal practice. The governments of Israel, Spain, and Taiwan have made policies to prevent their citizens from going to China to receive organ transplants. |
