John's presentation is entitled "WEST COAST SUB ATTACKS DURING WWII."  The California coast was SWARMING with Japanese submarines in the weeks immediately following the attack on Pearl Harbor.  Between December 10, 1941 and October 1942, nine Japanese submarines sunk a dozen merchant ships between Vancouver and San Diego as well as shelling the California coast on more than one occasion--episodes little remembered today. His talk is based on interviews he conducted with the Japanese naval officers who participated in the attacks. These interviews form the backbone of his non-fiction book, OPERATION STORM, which "The Wall Street Journal" called, "a fascinating, meticulously researched, and deft account."

Moe Roddy is a retired RN and transplant to the bay area from St. John USVI and Newport RI. She has sailed and raced extensively in the Caribbean and North East both ocean racing and deliveries. In 2005, at the age of 51, she became the second woman to finish the single handed leg of the Bermuda 1,2 ( the first having finished hours before her) and on the return leg to Newport her crew member was another woman, together they became the first women’s team to compete and finish both legs of the Bermuda 1,2. A record they still hold. She has spoken around the country about heart disease, the number killer of women, and uses her experience of both being a nurse assisting in open heart surgery and single handing to Bermuda to educate women about heart disease and empowering them to take control of their health. As she likes to say, “Sailing empowers women to do the things they thought impossible”. Moe recently retired after 34 years of nursing. She is now actively involved as a volunteer at the Guide Dogs for the Blind, is on the Advisory Board at the St. Francis Sailing Foundation and is active racing on Lulu with her partner and race management at both StFYC and SFYC.

Kenji and Nancy are the producers and directors of a documentary on how and why we have the parks around us.  You will probably know a few of the people who are featured in this presentation.

Beginning in the 1950s, a ragtag group of disparate citizens banded together to protect and preserve open spaces near urban areas from rampant development and, in so doing, brought about America's system of national seashores and recreation areas.  How they pulled off this incredible feat is the heart of REBELS WITH A CAUSE, the stunningly beautiful new documentary narrated by Academy Award-winning actress Frances McDormand.

Their hard fought campaign crosses party lines, overcomes seemingly insurmountable obstacles, and illustrates that passionate individuals have the power to influence the entire nation.  In the end, the efforts of these rebels set new precedents for protecting open space and shaped the environmental movement as we know it today.

Feel free to invite a friend.  This will be a wonderful meeting!
