Love Cemetery: Unburying the Secret History of Slaves
Mar. 06, 2018
China Galland will be our speaker on April 17, 2018. Her presentation is entitled "Love Cemetery: Unburying the Secret History of Slaves." It is also the title of her book. By the eve of the Civil War, there were four million slaves in North America, and Harrison County was the largest slave-owning county in Texas. So when China Galland returned to research her family history there, it should not have surprised her to learn of unmarked cemeteries for slaves. "My daddy never let anybody plow this end of the field," a local matron told a startled Galland during a visit to her antebellum mansion. "The slaves are buried there." Galland's subsequent effort to help restore just one of these cemeteries—Love Cemetery—unearths a quintessential American story of prejudice, land theft, and environmental destruction, uncovering racial wounds that are slow to heal. Galland gathers an interracial group of local religious leaders and laypeople to work on restoring Love Cemetery, securing community access to it, and rededicating it to the memories of those buried there. In her attempt to help reconsecrate Love Cemetery, Galland unearths the ghosts of slavery that still haunt us today. Research into county historical records and interviews with local residents uncover two versions of history—one black, one white. Galland unpacks these tangled narratives to reveal a history of shame—of slavery and lynching, Jim Crow laws and land takings (the theft of land from African-Americans), and ongoing exploitation of the land surrounding the cemetery by oil and gas drilling. With dread she even discovers how her own ancestors benefited from the racial imbalance. |

Leaving No One Behind: a Mill Valley Effort to Recover America's War Dead.
May 22, 2018
Keith Phillips will be our speaker on May 22, 2018. His presentation is entitled "Leaving No One Behind: a Mill Valley Effort to Recover America's War Dead." There are 83,000 Missing in Action (MIAs) Service Personnel from World War II, Korea, Vietnam and the Cold War. A Military History buff, Keith first developed an interest in the MIAs when in New Guinea a local tribal chief asked him to bring home some American remains in his village. From that starting point began a sense of mission to re-energize the country's efforts to locate and recover the remains, and through Project Homecoming to assist families in their efforts. During his time with us Keith will speak to the "facts and figures" associated with the missing, speak to their presence in Marin County and worldwide and discuss the combination of Science, international goodwill and serendipity that all play a role in return of the missing.

North Korea: The Hermit Kingdom
Jul. 03, 2018
Mill Valley Rotarian Bob Canepa will be our speaker on July 3rd. His presentation is entitled: "North Korea: The Hermit Kingdom." The focus of his talk is on the history, politics and everyday life in a totalitarian society and the Kim Family Dynasty (Kim Il Sung, Kim Jong-Il, and Kim Jong-Un). He will discuss some of the disparities regarding life expectancy, infant mortality rates, GDP, exports, military size, military budgets between North and South Korea. His slides include the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea, the Joint Security Area, an Invasion Tunnel, the USS Pueblo, Revolutionary billboards, the Bridge of No Return, the massive mausoleum of Kim Il Sung & Kim Jong-Il, the Arirang Mass Games, Pyongyang and most importantly the North Korean people. He will also share his harrowing experience of almost being arrested for "illegal interaction" (aka spying) in North Korea. He has been to 104 countries around the world, and this was far and away the most fascinating and bizarre of all his travel experiences. He visited the Soviet Union, Poland, Hungary, East Germany, and Czechoslovakia in 1968 when the Cold War was intense. He narrowly escaped from Czechoslovakia before the Soviet troops and tanks invaded that summer. He visited Vietnam in 2007, China in 2011 and all fifteen of the former Soviet republics which are now independent countries. None of these countries can even remotely compare to the totalitarianism and mind control that exists in North Korea today. |
