Compass and a Camera
Jul. 25, 2017
Steve Burchik is our speaker on July 25th. His presentation is entitled "Compass and a Camera, A Year in Vietnam." With a compass to direct him in his job as a forward observer and a personal camera to document his experiences—and keep him connected to his creative side—Vietnam veteran Steven Burchik was lucky enough to make it home and years later decided to write about the most challenging year of his life. Like any experience, his year spent with the First Infantry Division stationed in the rice paddies near Saigon included good times as well as bad. He candidly recalls how, although he believed communism to be a serious threat in the world, he soon learned that a guerilla war is a difficult one to fight, and survival rather than victory quickly became his focus. But he also remembers the exhilaration of helicopter rides over serpentine rivers and the time he introduced village kids to a gumball machine. A unique memoir of the war, this presentation pulls not only from Burchik’s memories, but also from the daily letters he wrote to his fiancée (she kept every single one) and includes numerous photographs from his collection of over four thousand. |

Through sharing his lived experience of migration and immigration in an interview style format with Rod, Mesgna will describe what it took to walk out of his country as a young boy, to get to Mill Valley and assimilate into life here as an immigrant, and what his hopes are for his future as a member of our community and our country. WEST COAST SUB ATTACKS DURING WWII
Oct. 31, 2017
John Geoghegan will be our speaker on October 31. His presentation is entitled "WEST COAST SUB ATTACKS DURING WWII." The California coast was SWARMING with Japanese submarines in the weeks immediately following the attack on Pearl Harbor. Between December 10, 1941 and October 1942, nine Japanese submarines sunk a dozen merchant ships between Vancouver and San Diego as well as shelling the California coast on more than one occasion--episodes little remembered today. His talk is based on interviews he conducted with the Japanese naval officers who participated in the attacks. These interviews form the backbone of his non-fiction book, OPERATION STORM, which "The Wall Street Journal" called, "a fascinating, meticulously researched, and deft account." |
