Golden Gate Bridge: An Inside View--Art, Architecture & Photography.
Jan. 23, 2018
Bob David is our speaker on January 23, 2018. His presentation is entitled: "Golden Gate Bridge: An Inside View--Art, Architecture & Photography." Few people have come to know the Golden Gate Bridge, inside and out, as extensively as Bob David. An architect and photographer, he began his career at the Bridge in 1973. For his first 30 years at the Bridge, he served as Design Director for the agency, which includes the operation of the Bridge itself plus the Golden Gate Transit Bus and Ferry system. In that capacity, he and his design team produced all the public information graphics and display hardware for the Transit system and the Bridge. He continues working in a semi-retired status, focusing on documentary photography of Bridge projects, such as the still ongoing Seismic Retrofit Project. Being inclined to be a student of history, Bob became a Bridge historian and archivist. He will recount his personal journey uncovering various historical, artistic and architectural anecdotes, some gathered first-hand from its creators. In 2012, he helped curate the Bridge’s 75th anniversary exhibit at the California Historical Society. The contribution of this monument to the culture and mystique of America’s West cannot be overstated. It is one of the world’s most recognized and admired geographic symbols. Bob’s blend of stories and images will provide a unique perspective on this celebrated San Francisco landmark |

Railroads in our Mill Valley and Marin Backyards.
Feb. 20, 2018
Historian and Railfan Richard Torney will be our speaker on February 20th. His presentation is entitled "Railroads in our Mill Valley and Marin Backyards." It will include a slide show featuring historic photos taken along the path of the Northwestern Pacific Railroad’s Electric Interurban Route coupled with recent photos taken in, as much as possible, the same locations. The old images date from the 1870’s through the 1960’s, and the current images have been taken between 2003 and today. Richard hopes that this presentation will help those familiar with these trains remember, and demonstrate to those who are not, the importance that railroads have played in showing the San Francisco Bay Area, and indeed the world, the wonders and opportunities that are to be found and enjoyed in Marin County. Our home would not be what it is today without this influence |

Rosa Parks: An International Icon of Resistance to Racial Segregation.
Feb. 27, 2018
Oak Dowling will be our speaker on December 5th. His presentation is entitled "Rosa Parks: An International Icon of Resistance to Racial Segregation." By refusing to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery, Alabama, city bus in 1955, black seamstress Rosa Parks helped initiate the civil rights movement in the United States. The leaders of the local black community organized a bus boycott that began the day Parks was convicted of violating the segregation laws. Led by a young Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the boycott lasted more than a year—during which Parks not coincidentally lost her job—and ended only when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that bus segregation was unconstitutional. Over the next half-century, Parks became a nationally recognized symbol of dignity and strength in the struggle to end entrenched racial segregation. The US Congress called her "the first lady of civil rights" and "the mother of the freedom movement." |

Love Cemetery: Unburying the Secret History of Slaves
Mar. 06, 2018
China Galland will be our speaker on April 17, 2018. Her presentation is entitled "Love Cemetery: Unburying the Secret History of Slaves." It is also the title of her book. By the eve of the Civil War, there were four million slaves in North America, and Harrison County was the largest slave-owning county in Texas. So when China Galland returned to research her family history there, it should not have surprised her to learn of unmarked cemeteries for slaves. "My daddy never let anybody plow this end of the field," a local matron told a startled Galland during a visit to her antebellum mansion. "The slaves are buried there." Galland's subsequent effort to help restore just one of these cemeteries—Love Cemetery—unearths a quintessential American story of prejudice, land theft, and environmental destruction, uncovering racial wounds that are slow to heal. Galland gathers an interracial group of local religious leaders and laypeople to work on restoring Love Cemetery, securing community access to it, and rededicating it to the memories of those buried there. In her attempt to help reconsecrate Love Cemetery, Galland unearths the ghosts of slavery that still haunt us today. Research into county historical records and interviews with local residents uncover two versions of history—one black, one white. Galland unpacks these tangled narratives to reveal a history of shame—of slavery and lynching, Jim Crow laws and land takings (the theft of land from African-Americans), and ongoing exploitation of the land surrounding the cemetery by oil and gas drilling. With dread she even discovers how her own ancestors benefited from the racial imbalance. |

Leaving No One Behind: a Mill Valley Effort to Recover America's War Dead.
May 22, 2018
Keith Phillips will be our speaker on May 22, 2018. His presentation is entitled "Leaving No One Behind: a Mill Valley Effort to Recover America's War Dead." There are 83,000 Missing in Action (MIAs) Service Personnel from World War II, Korea, Vietnam and the Cold War. A Military History buff, Keith first developed an interest in the MIAs when in New Guinea a local tribal chief asked him to bring home some American remains in his village. From that starting point began a sense of mission to re-energize the country's efforts to locate and recover the remains, and through Project Homecoming to assist families in their efforts. During his time with us Keith will speak to the "facts and figures" associated with the missing, speak to their presence in Marin County and worldwide and discuss the combination of Science, international goodwill and serendipity that all play a role in return of the missing.
