Climate Reality Project
Sep. 09, 2020 7:30 a.m.
Our mission is to educate our friends, neighbors, and communities on the threats of the climate crisis and to motivate them to take action in the fight against it. As many of our members are in the Rotary club, we would like to give back with our presentations. My chapter has Climate Reality Project speakers trained personally by Al Gore. And it is my team's job to carry out our mission by giving informative and uplifting presentations to those around me, an example of which can be found in the following TED Talk by Mr. Gore: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVfgkFaswn4 . Our presentation answers three questions about climate change. Do we have to change? Can we change? Do we have the will to change? Since being trained as a Climate Reality Leader and speaker in 2018, Harriet Harvey-Horn has engaged diverse audiences across Northern California in the facts about the climate crisis, its solutions and what actions individuals can take. Prior to committing her energies to the climate, Harriet enjoyed a 35-year high tech career, in engineering, marketing, management and consulting roles. She also held numerous leadership positions on non-profit boards and volunteer organizations. Harriet holds a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Texas Tech and an MBA from Santa Clara University, as well as several climate-related certifications. She has logged well over 100 other Acts of Leadership with the Climate Reality Project, and also leads the Santa Clara County Chapter’s membership development and engagement efforts. In addition to the Climate Reality Project, Harriet is active with the Foundation for Climate Restoration, 350.org and the Sierra Club. She and her husband live in Los Gatos. They have two sons in their 20’s who fuel Harriet’s passion to restore a healthy, livable habitat on Earth. |

How Dry I Ain't - the Ignoble Experiment that Failed
Sep. 16, 2020 7:30 a.m.
John Freeman was born, educated and has lived his entire life in San Francisco. He received his BA in History at the University of San Francisco and Master’s Degree at San Francisco State University. For 35 years he taught a variety of subjects in San Francisco Pubic High Schools, but retirement finally gave him the opportunity to pursue his passion for San Francisco history in depth. He has researched and published numerous articles in print and online on a diverse range of local historical topics. John has consulted for museum exhibits, and historic novels set in San Francisco. He also has done presentations on a variety of topics in local history in differing settings. He has guest lectured in local colleges and lifelong learning programs in the Bay Area, led historic neighborhood walks and done podcasts. Freed from a mandated curriculum structure, John enjoys following topics in local history that are unique and engaging, in this case, the untold story of how uniquely the Bay Area dealt with the 13 years of Prohibition. This year we celebrate the centennial of the beginning of the Volstead Act (1920 – 1933), the enforcement legislation of the 18 th Amendment. The Prohibition movement had its origins in the Northeast and Midwest, with very little enthusiasm in the West, and particularly in the San Francisco Bay Area. But it was the “Law of the Land,” and we had to obey its restrictions. The 13 years of Prohibition have been sensationalized, primarily because of gang violence and dramatic law enforcement methods in big cities and smaller communities in other regions of the nation. This presentation will focus on the less dramatic activities of citizens in our area, who found ways to circumvent what President Herbert Hoover called the “noble experiment” with a much more relaxed attitude. |

It's Veteran's Day so Let's do Yoga!
Nov. 11, 2020
Robin Gueth is the owner of the Stress Management Center of Marin (SMC) in Larkspur (est.2000). She has been teaching yoga therapy and stress management for 30 years. Robin hasenjoyed 15+ years teaching for Kaiser Permanente Health Education. She has additionally been both a member of their hospital team working with Chronic Pain and a teacher of Stress Management for their Physician Wellness Program.
YOGA FOR VETS! After the research at the Schurig Center for Brain Injury Recovery showed such a marked improvement in sense of wellbeing, we went to the San Francisco VA to tell them about it. Returning veterans show a high incidence of brain injuries. The SFVA got very excited about our research and asked us to take our program into the North Bay, where a large number of veterans were living and the distance to get to the SFVA was not practical for attending classes.
We developed the Yoga For Vets Program in 2011 and established it as a 501c3 non-profit. We provide gear and specially trained instructors to any organization who asks us. We are currently teaching in the Santa Rosa YMCA and a couple of residential support homes. We were asked to add classes during the pandemic, due to the stress levels, and have been teaching outside all this time. One program just got a positive COVID participant and the program there had to be shut down for 2 weeks and our instructor tested. She tested negative and is looking forward to getting back to work there. |

Author and Historian, "White Devil’s Daughters, The House of Mondavi, and Lost Kingdom"
Dec. 02, 2020
Julia Flynn Siler is a New York Times best-selling author and journalist. Her most recent book, The White Devil's Daughters: The Women Who Fought Slavery in San Francisco's Chinatown was a New York Times Editors’ Choice. Her other books are Lost Kingdom: Hawaii’s Last Queen, the Sugar Kings, and America’s First Imperial Adventure. Her first book, The House of Mondavi: The Rise and Fall of an American Wine Dynasty, was a finalist for a James Beard Award and a Gerald Loeb Award for distinguished reporting. A veteran journalist, Siler is a longtime contributor and former staff writer for The Wall Street Journal and has been a guest commentator on the BBC, CNBC, and CNN. She lives in Northern California with her husband and their two sons.
During the first hundred years of Chinese immigration--from 1848 to 1943--San Francisco was home to a shockingly extensive underground slave trade in Asian women, who were exploited as prostitutes and indentured servants. Julia examines this little-known chapter in our history--and gives us a vivid portrait of the safe house to which enslaved women escaped. Accompanied by historical photos from the book, she'll explore the Marin settings and people in her nonfiction book.
