Here is a jewel of Marin County. He was recently at our Club for presentation of business entity of the month as part of Rotary Club of Marin Sunrise vocational program. He had us in stitches with his amazing humor. You should not miss this great speaker. It only took us nine months to have join him us for our program on May 24th!!
I’m a writer, a lawyer, a bookseller, and an amateur musician. I invite you to read the articles on these pages http://williampetrocelli.com/ , and I hope you’ll also read my new book The Circle of Thirteen. Let me know how you feel about the issues raised. Thanks for taking the time to browse through this website. Bill Petrocelli |

Ever since third grade, I've always dreamed of coming to the US to play college tennis. Though I was, of course, excited by the prospect of experiencing the American culture, the idea of playing tennis at a university level was what really cemented my desire to come. After I graduated high school in Switzerland, I solidified my tennis skills, and applied for universities. I first attended a small school in Kentucky and then transferred to Purdue University in Indiana, where I played tennis. Initially, I thought I would spend only four years studying in the US, but I was quickly enamored by the culture. Once I decided I wanted to stay, I realized I had to determine a strategy, because the US immigration laws would not make this easy. I had been to San Francisco on a backpacking trip during college and had fallen in love with this city. had to stIay in this country, and I had to do so in San Francisco. After volunteering for 3 months in Brazil after graduation, I moved to SF with nothing - no housing, no job, and no contacts. I went to interview after interview, but was constantly faced with the question of sponsorship. It was horrible. During every interview, I was asked about my visa status. Though my OPT status would last for a year, I would then need corporate sponsorship. I had some offers, but I didn't want just any job so I remained persistent. Finally, I found a job that I was really passionate about. I've since been working at Granicus- a company that builds software for government agencies to allow them to be more transparent, efficient and engage more effectively with their citizens. I am currently in the process of obtaining my H1B. Immigration reform would make this country exponentially stronger. I have so many friends who are incredibly educated, experienced, and hard working who are unable to remain in the United States. The US educates and trains people to become the best and the brightest, and rather than sending them away, they should be working to retain this talent. |

Essense Coaching and Consulting
Jun. 28, 2017
He has a wonderful topic concerning the psychology of success. It helps us overcome inherent barriers in our nature that stand between ourselves and success. Fascinating topic. Very knowledgeable person! I spoke with him yesterday and was totally engaged by his discussion. I think you and our members will enjoy it as well! After graduating cum laude with a double major in Economics and Finance, and a successful career in the medical sales arena, I went back to pursue a graduate degree in psychology. I continued to reach new peaks in my career and yet it still felt empty on many levels. Something was not quite right and I was determined to find out why. I found many of the answers I was looking for while emerged in the literature on human experience. Psychology, in its broadest terms, the study of human experience. Rather than pursuing a clinical path after completing my doctoral coursework, I chose to develop a field work program that blended my business education and experience with the emerging field of Imaginal psychology. Five years ago, this field work program evolved into Essence Consulting-an integrated practice that combines coaching, transformative learning, performance psychology, and business consulting. Our jobs determine to a large extent what our life is like. Work can be challenging, enjoyable and fulfilling or it can be a soulless pursuit that leaves you exhausted and disengaged. Given that we spend more time at work than in any other capacity, I feel that work must be a vehicle for personal and professional development. I believe Essence Consulting is unique because we offer an approach to managing projects and getting things done that is grounded in psychology and business. In this day and age of continuous overwhelm, you need to be leveraging the latest evidence on human performance in the service of your professional growth and development. We believe human development and business development are highly interdependent processes. TOPIC Leveraging the biological building blocks of your emotions in the pursuit of your best personal and professional life. A functional approach to affective neuroscience that anyone can start to use immediately. |

Executive Director of Resilient Neighborhood
Jul. 19, 2017
Calling on Marin Households to Take Climate Action
Small actions that people take can make a big difference. Most of us don't realize the far-reaching impacts that our thousands of daily decisions have on our community and our planet. We honestly want to do the right thing but don’t know what to do. Resilient Neighborhoods gives people the information to make positive choices, and supports them in learning new habits and responsible stewardship. Working together, Marin citizens are showing that we are willing and able to take the action needed to avert run-away climate change and to prepare ourselves for the changes already taking place from a warming planet.
Resilient Neighborhoods works in partnership with Marin’s cities and towns to help Marin meet it CO2 reduction goals. Citizen action is critical in Marin because 65% of the carbon pollution here comes from the residents. The Resilient Neighborhoods program is free, fun and done by teams of people. Learn about the program and how your family can go on a ‘low carbon’ diet to lose 5,000 lbs. of CO2 in 60 days. Already 320 families have reduced 3.7 million lbs. of carbon pollution. That’s enough to keep an acre of Arctic Sea ice from melting every year or removing 1,728 Marin homes off the grid permanently! http://www.
Tamra Peters founded and has been Executive Director of the program for 6 years. Since shortly after the first Earth Day in 1970, she has been working to protect the earth. She was on the staff of The Nature Conservancy, Natural Resources Defense Council, Rainforest Action Network and other organizations. Tamra has served on the boards of both national Earth Share and Earth Share California and was president and a trustee for 18 years of the Strong Foundation for Environmental Values. Most recently, she served for seven years on Sustainable Marin’s board. In 2017, Tamra received the Co-Citizen of the Year Award from the City of San Rafael and the Green Award for Environmental Leadership from the Marin Conservation League. She also received Certificates of Special Recognition for her work from U.S. Congressman Jared Huffman, State Senator Mike McGuire and State Assemblyman Mark Levine.

Pollination: A love story
Aug. 02, 2017
A naturalist, May Chen loves to share the wonder of the natural world with children. Since she retired from Medical Technology many years ago, May has been training herself for the role, picking up classes and workshops on natural history wherever possible. She has been a docent at Martin Griffin Preserve for more than 20 years, taking school children out for interpretive hikes. More recently, May has been scouting for similar volunteer opportunities closer to home, in Oakland. She helps with plant propagation at the native plant nursery of the Friends of Sausal Creek, a grassroots watershed restoration and protection organization. With other volunteers she tends FOSC’s nascent pollinator garden, and helps spearhead an education program on pollinators at the garden. When May took an entomology class several years ago, she fell in love with the Hymenopterans, the group that includes ants, bees and wasps. With a dual fondness for botany and entomology, she has been focusing her studies on plant-insect interactions. The alarming decline of honeybees in agricultural food production convinced May that she has an important role to play. She teaches about our native bees as alternative crop and garden pollinators. “So much of biology has been taught as nature ‘red in tooth and claw’, focused on predator-prey relationships. I would like to see a shift to a gentler, mutualistic perspective. And there’s no better way to talk about mutualism than pollination.” |

Railroads HIstory in Mill Valley Part II
Aug. 23, 2017
This slide show features historic photos taken along the path of the Northwestern Pacific Railroad’s Electric Interurban Route coupled with recent photos taken in, as much as possible, the same locations. “Short Version”, for a 25-30 minute show of slides and commentary. It is hoped that this presentation will help those familiar with these trains remember, and demonstrate to those who are not, the importance that railroads have played in showing the San Francisco Bay Area, and indeed the world, the wonders that are to be found and enjoyed in Marin County. Our home would not be what it is today without this influence. What an asset railroads could be today to lessen the congestion found in our everyday lives. If your organization would be interested in hosting this slide show, please contact me. |

Our Dsitrict Governor Visit to our Club
Sep. 13, 2017
Ron Gin is a native San Franciscan, born at Chinese Hospital in Chinatown. He and his older sister and brother grew up in the Richmond District and he attended George Washington High School. While in high school, he worked at Kentucky Fried Chicken and his family ate a lot of the Colonel’s chicken. Ron attended City College of San Francisco, and enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served three years toward the end of combat operations in Viet Nam. He returned to City College of San Francisco, where he received an AS degree in radiologic technology. He completed his Bachelor of Science at SF State University and worked as a hospital technologist, vice president of operations, and regional sales manager. After 13 years in medical management, Ron began studies for an MBA at the College of Notre Dame in Belmont and, in the process, met someone from Morgan Stanley who inspired him to make a career change. Since starting at Morgan Stanley in 1998, he has received multiple national sales awards and continues at Morgan Stanley as a Certified Financial Planner™, financial advisor, and vice president. On the Rotary front, District Membership Chair Helen Abe asked Ron to lunch in 2007, and the rest is history. He is a charter member of the Rotary Club of San Francisco Chinatown and served as the charter president-elect 2009-2010. Since that time he has served in numerous positions with his club and at the district level, including assistant governor, area membership coordinator, programs chair, current chief of staff, and now district governor 2017-2018. Personally, Ron is divorced with two adult children. He enjoys muscle cars, golf, cycling, tennis, and spending time with his girlfriend Liz Mark, who is also a member of the Rotary Club of San Francisco Chinatown. Last January, Ron organized the Hug It Forward Guatemala Bottle School project in which Liz and his daughter Tracy accompanied him. As anyone who knows Ron will tell you, he is a special guy…a true Rotarian in every way. |

RI in Nigeria
Nov. 08, 2017
I traveled to Nigeria for RI last September and I have been presenting the story of my trip ever since. It looks like the date would be Nov. 8. Actually, Jon traveled to Nigeria last January and he would be an excellent speaker if this date does not work for you. Just a little background, I am an AG in District 7780 and I have been fortunate enough to complete two Global Grants for work in Zambia. This spring I worked on a water project in the Dominican Republic. I guess you could say that my Rotary passion is International Service |
