From Rotarian Jon Smale's post to our club's Facebook site:
Kathy Maiers stopped by to discuss The 101 of Parkinson's. She is an Ambassador for the Parkinson's Foundation. She was also diagnosed with Parkinson's in 2018.
Some basics of Parkinson's:
There is no cure,
It's a progressive brain disorder,
Can affect movement, mood and thinking,
A healthy lifestyle can help maintain quality of life - the key, "Keep Moving"
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is called a movement disorder because of the tremors, slowing and stiffening movements it can cause, and these are the most obvious symptoms of the disease. However, Parkinson’s affects many systems in the body. Its symptoms are different from person to person and usually develop slowly over time.
Some symptoms are:
Mood - depression, anxiety, nervousness, and a lack of feeling (apathy)
Motor skills - shaking, slowness, stiffness, and walking or balance
Thinking and Memory - paying attention, learning new things, and slow thinking
