Steve Fine stopped in for a Zoom session with us. Steve is the founder and president of the Melanoma Education Foundation, attended colleges in the Boston area, receiving a doctorate in chemistry from Northeastern University. He then moved to Pennsylvania, completing a year of postdoctoral research at Lehigh University. Shortly after his son, Dan, died of melanoma in 1998 at the age of 26, he founded the non-profit Melanoma Education Foundation and, since 2000, has devoted full time to the Foundation. The primary activity of the Foundation has been educating high school and middle school wellness teachers about melanoma and providing them with free online lessons to educate their students about self-detecting melanoma while it is curable. The only way to tan safely is with a self tanner spray or lotion. Prior to the pandemic over 1700 schools in all 50 U.S. states and Canada were using the lessons, resulting in saved lives of students, teachers and their loved ones. Recently outreach was expanded to U.S. and Canadian Rotary clubs in Eastern, Atlantic, and Central time zones. Since mid-2022 over 500 virtual sessions on early self-detection and prevention of melanoma have been conducted. Steve is the public image director of the Rotary Club of Peabody, Massachusetts. For more than 100 years, the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International has helped Rotary members advance the mission of Rotary by advancing world understanding, goodwill, and peace by improving health, providing education, and improving the environment, and alleviating poverty. In 1957, the Rotary Foundation established special recognition known as Paul Harris Fellows to encourage and show appreciation for substantial contributions of $1,000 to the Rotary Foundation.
For many, a $1,000 contribution in a lumpsum can seem like a lot of money, so if you would like to become a Paul Harris Fellow by gradually contributing a $1,000 to the Rotary Foundation, our club is organizing Paul Harris Groups within our club membership. You can join a Paul Harris Group by contributing $100 each quarter through the quarterly dues bill you receive from Bob. We meet at 7:30 Wednesday mornings at Saint Anne’s Episcopal Church located at 2035 Charlton Road, Sunfish Lake, MN 55118. Join us for a continental breakfast with good coffee followed by an engaging program. On even number months, we meet at 7:30a at the Copperfield restaurant in Mendota Heights.
