Greetings from Palm Springs.  The Rotary Four Way Test compels me to divulge that I did not compose the following, I stumbled across it on the University of California – San Diego website.  I found it interesting, and I hope you do too.

Community Service: Top 10 Reasons to Volunteer
Thinking of becoming a volunteer? See a list of reasons that will help you make up your mind.

10: It's good for you.
Volunteering provides physical and mental rewards. It:
  • Reduces stress: Experts report that when you focus on someone other than yourself, it interrupts usual tension-producing patterns.
  • Makes you healthier: Moods and emotions, like optimism, joy, and control over one's fate, strengthen the immune system.
9: It saves resources.
Volunteering provides valuable community services so more money can be spent on local improvements.
8: Volunteers gain professional experience.
You can test out a career.
7: It brings people together.
As a volunteer you assist in:
  • Uniting people from diverse backgrounds to work toward a common goal
  • Building camaraderie and teamwork
6: It promotes personal growth and self esteem.
Understanding community needs helps foster empathy and self-efficacy.
5: Volunteering strengthens your community.
As a volunteer you help:
  • Support families (daycare and eldercare)
  • Improve schools (tutoring, literacy)
  • Support youth (mentoring and after-school programs)
  • Beautify the community (beach and park cleanups)
4: You learn a lot.
Volunteers learn things like these:
  • Self: Volunteers discover hidden talents that may change your view on your self worth.
  • Government: Through working with local non-profit agencies, volunteers learn about the functions and operation of our government.
  • Community: Volunteers gain knowledge of local resources available to solve community needs.
3: You get a chance to give back.
People like to support community resources that they use themselves or that benefit people they care about.
2: Volunteering encourages civic responsibility.
Community service and volunteerism are an investment in our community and the people who live in it.
1: You make a difference.
Every person counts!

Our club strives with active volunteers serving on our board, but one board position yet to be filled is the position of President Elect.  If you have an interest in stepping into this this roll, or if there is a fellow club member you would suggest to be our next president, let me know.
From Susan & Joe Hommes
We are so grateful to our Rotary friends for the kind words of support shared following Joe's mom's recent and sudden passing.  It's been so helpful to have the gracious and caring support of colleagues, friends and family, and our faith, to help us through this difficult loss.  The beautiful flowers sent and the many cards and other messages of support received were truly appreciated. The personal connections through these kind gestures and the words of comfort you shared just reinforce why Rotary is such an amazing group to be involved with.
With deep gratitude,
Susan, Joe and Peter and the entire Hommes family

Last week's speaker

Rhonda Lewis, head of nursing at Southview Acres, was very moving!  She talked about the care that is received at Southview Acres and how understaffed they are.  They lost 32 residents since Covid hit.  Thanks Rhonda for the emotional talk!  Also, thanks to Anna Raway for getting Rhonda to speak to us!

Rotary International - End Polio Now

October is an important month for us! Why?

Two big reasons: October 24th is World Polio Day, where the Rotary world leads a celebration of our progress towards eradicating polio. And, slightly less important (especially with the way the Twins finished) but still important to us…it’s the baseball playoffs! We figured we’d blend the two together once again.
Introducing District 5960’s STRIKE OUT POLIO Challenge!

Polio eradication is Rotary’s most significant priority, and we aren’t going to stop until we get the job
done. And, in the current environment, we know how much a viral outbreak can affect our society.

We would like to encourage you to donate to Polio Plus this month. As always, we just encourage you to give something, regardless of the amount. It costs less than $5 to vaccinate a child fully, so any amount helps!

We want to encourage you to be generous, though, and that’s why we have a special matching program again this year!

We will reward and recognize people who give at two levels:

BASE HIT: Give at least $100 to Polio Plus during October, and the donation will be matched 1:1 with Recognition Points, as well as a membership to the POLIO PLUS SOCIETY.

HOME RUN: Give at least $365 (the equivalent of $1/day) to Polio Plus during October, and in addition to the POLIO PLUS SOCIETY membership, we will utilize Recognition Points to make you a Paul Harris Fellow!

Once you’ve decided how much you are comfortable giving, it’s easy to give to PolioPlus: You can give a check (made payable to The Rotary Foundation with “PolioPlus” in the memo line) to your Club President or Foundation Team Lead or you can make a payment online at Donate | Rotary International. One note: you need a My Rotary account to give through Rotary Direct, so CLICK HERE for easy set-up instructions.

Remember, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is a great partner in the effort to eradicate polio:
Every dollar Rotarians give, the Gates Foundation matches 2:1!!
Marketing ideas
Board members Alan Ruvelson and Valarie Namen are exploring new ways to attract people to our club.  They are wondering if there is someone who has experience with NextDoor.  If it's you, please contact Alan or Valarie.
