President's corner

As I was beginning to write this letter on the last day of June 2022, I considered using the theme of the rearview mirror to reflect on the past year of our Rotary Club.

However, it occurred to me that I would be facing in the wrong direction.

We are a forward- looking Club comprised of energetic, charitable and optimistic people. That is our identity and our perspective. I was so fortunate (blessed) to have you, members of the WSP/MH Rotary Club, as my guide and counsel for this past year. The old adage goes that we learn from our mistakes. Our motto should be that we persevere, pivoting as we go, with the goal to have our efforts be beneficial to all concerned while building goodwill and better friendships.

We can all be proud of our Club’s contribution towards financially supporting young students at Two Rivers High School via scholarships and our ongoing support of ALMAS; feeding the community through Loaves & Fishes; pitching in to pick up refuge along Delaware Ave. and our numerous selective and welcomed financial gifts to charitable organizations that directly serve the community, like Neighbors.

I am very looking forward to our Club’s next year with you all. . and the year after that. . .and the year after that . . .and the year. . . . .

Last Week's Speaker

Our speaker last week was Kim Bihm from the Fisher House Program. Fisher House provides hospitality lodging or Veterans and their families. We have two in the Twin Cities and there is no charge for the families to stay. There are currently 50 Fisher Houses in the United States with 15 coming online in the next 4 to 5 years. Some worldwide facts: 92 Fisher Houses so far; 11.5 million days of lodging provided; over $547 million savings to families in lodging and transportation. Fundraising opportunity for our club!

Fundraiser opportunity with the Prior Lake Rotary's Lakefront Music Fest: We (WSP/MH) rotary are seeking members & friends to work this event for a shift either on Friday, July 8 or Saturday, July 9. If you or a friend volunteer for a 4 hour shift, we could earn $120 for our club coffers. Please notify Colleen Watson or David Miller of your availability. Thank you! And you get into the Music Fest free!!!

No merger with SSP/IGH

From Charlie Thompson, president of the SSP/IGH Rotary Club on June 22, 2022: Our club has made the difficult decision to resign from Rotary. I submitted the resignation form earlier today. We believe this is a more effective way to move forward with members being able to make their own decisions regarding their status as Rotarians. Those wishing to continue will be encouraged to reach out to you and join your club.

From Rotary International - Ukraine

Regarding the contributions to the Rotary Disaster Fund through Rotary International: we raised more than $15 million and together have funded more than 90 disaster response grants so far to help the people of Ukraine. Your contributions to our Disaster Response Fund between 3 March and 30 April will continue to make possible the member-led projects that help Ukrainian refugees and support relief efforts within the country.

June 21, 2022 Board Meeting Highlights

Here's some of the stuff we did:

1 - Donated $500.00 to Colleen's Kiwanis Kid project

2 - Our club will be participating in the Prior Lake Rotary's Lakefront Music Fest - July 8th & 9th as a fundraiser for our club.

3 - Sending $500.00 to Northern Dakota County Yellow Ribbon effort.

4 - Discussed results of SSP/IGH survey.

5 - Next Loaves & Fishes: August 4 and August 30th.

6 - Don McCall will share his 2022-2023 board members as his year begins on July 1, 2022.

7 - David Miller is following up with Peter on Ethics Day for next year.

8 - Exploring the possibility of Moonstruck fundraiser in October.

Club meetings thru August

President David announced we will be meeting at St. Anne's Episcopal Church at least through August 2022. The church is located at 2035 Charlton Road, Sunfish Lake. We will have an assortment of pastries available, as well as coffee. We have wonderful speakers so please plan on attending! We need to mask up for now!
