The Taxman Cometh
Yes, we near that time of year, April 15* (but this year, April 18) when our individual income tax returns are due. I am relieved to have filed our return some time ago. Just acquiring all the documents for the return requires an in-home office.
The federal income tax was established in 1913. It was established after a long, protracted debate in Congress to create a funding source for the federal government other than the complex system of import tariffs for foreign goods.  The federal income tax system was constitutionally established by the 16th Amendment in 1913.
The States soon followed suit with their own income tax systems.
The first U.S. tax code was 400 pages. Today, the IRS tax regulations span over 70,000 pages. Albert Einstein said, “[T]he hardest thing to understand is the income tax.” Duh. We should all be thankful to our competent Rotarian tax preparers. Thank you.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt said, “[T]axes are the dues we pay for the privilege of membership in an organized society.”
We enjoy the fruits of an organized society, as Rotarians we work to make it beneficial to all concerned.
Loaves & Fishes - big numbers served
Big numbers at Loaves & Fishes.  March 29th we served 160+.  April 7th we served 200+.  Thanks to all who helped!
Last Week's Speaker
Brent Tabor, VP of Social Impact, gave us an enthusiastic presentation about the Minnesota Vikings and their new facility in Eagan.  The new campus contains the Twin Cities Orthopedic Performance Center, practice fields (which are used by high schools), Viking museum, new Omni Hotel, plus businesses in the Viking Lakes area.  Brett focused on the Vikings social impact, community relations, legends activities, youth & high school events, and MN Viking Foundation.  Lots of the Viking players give back to our community! Peter mentioned the new facilities have helped lower school taxes for ISD 197!  Brett gave those of us who attended autographed Viking helmets!  Very good presentation!
Rose Time
It's Rotary Roses fundraising time!  Just in time for Administrative Assistant Day on April 27th.  Red roses or multicolor!  Cost is $20.00 per dozen and includes vase!  Pick up your roses at St. Anne's church on Tuesday, April 26th.  Please contact Susan Hommes (shommes@umn.edu) with your order by April 6th.
