Loaves and Fishes - This Thursday

We served up over 300 meals last Tuesday at Loaves and Fishes. Thanks for those who helped.

This week is the first Thursday of an even number month. So we get to do it again.

Our Police Chief of Mendota Heights stopped by on Wed July 30

Kelly McCarthy was appointed Chief of the Mendota Heights Police Department in 2017. Kelly worked as a Training Officer, Detective, promoted to Sergeant in 2005, Captain in 2012, and Deputy Director of Public Safety in 2014. Kelly was appointed Chair of the Peace Officer Standards and Training Board by Gov. Walz and served from 2019-2023.

Having grown up in and around Mendota Heights, Kelly understands the importance of transparency and treating people with compassion and respect. She is a firm believer, the county needs to have more dedicated mental health crisis teams, so officers are not the first to try to de-escalate the situation. When she was sworn in, her goal was to ensure that every MHPD Officer had the high level of support they needed to meet the high expectations of the community. She is working on a speed enforcement program now where speeders over 10 miles per hour will be given a warning the first time and ticket after for future infractions. The ticket is more like a parking ticket however, and will not hit your insurance or driving record. Going forward, Kelly’s primary goal is to create a physical working environment that is conducive to serving the public in an effective and efficient manner of which officers can be proud.

Texas Disaster Relief

Email from our District Governor Glenn Bowers:

I know that all of you have seen images of the destruction and read stories about the tragic loss of life in Kerr County, Texas. Kerr County and Kerrville are in Rotary District 5850. I have been in constant contact with their District Governor, Craig Hardy. This event has impacted countless lives. It has also impacted our Rotary family. Kerrville is home to two Rotary clubs. Even with some members suffering loss, they are working hard to assess needs and see where Rotary can have an impact. In addition to the loss of life, over 800 homes have been destroyed or damaged.
Tragedy has hit our larger Rotary family. This morning I heard that the president-elect of the Rotary Club of East Montgomery County in District 5910 (east Texas) was vacationing along the river. His body was recovered, his daughter rescued, but his wife and sons are still missing.
People have immediate needs to be met. To help meet those needs, District 5840 has activated its 501(c)(3) foundation to begin collecting tax-deductible donations to assist with disaster relief and long-term recovery.

June 2025 Board Meeting Highlights

Here are some highlights from our June 17, 2025 Board meeting:

1 - $4800 available for donations.

2 - Our district fees per member is going up $5.00. Board voted to pass this on to the membership.

3 - Next Loaves & Fishes is July 31st at St. Matt's. (3:30 to 6:00)

4 - A donation for $500 was approved for Jim Plucker's Poultry for Nicaragua international project.

5 - July 2nd meeting moved to a social at the Copperfield.

6 - Scheduling assignments for the Prior Lake Music Fest for training and the event will be sent out by Dave H.

7 - President Elect Jennifer Giovinazzo will provide a list of 2025-2026 board members to Bob & Dave H.

8 - Next board meeting is via zoom on July 15 at 7:30a.m.

Fundraising Committee needs ideas!

Prez Val Namen and David Miller are heading up our club's Fundraising Committee. Please let them know if you have any fundraising ideas and/or would like to join their committee!

Something new to meetings

The board would like to have local businesses present a 3 minute introduction to their company at each meeting.

Please let Dave Hanson know if you have someone and he'll add them to the meeting schedule.

One 3 minute presentation at each meeting would be the goal.

We meet at 7:30 Wednesday mornings at Saint Anne’s Episcopal Church located at 2035 Charlton Road, Sunfish Lake, MN 55118. Join us for a continental breakfast with good coffee followed by an engaging program. On even number months, we meet at 7:30a at the Copperfield restaurant in Mendota Heights.
