We ritualistically recite the Rotary four Way Test at the beginning of each Rotary meeting, and I invite you to consider its history.  The Four-Way Test, was created in 1932 by Rotarian Herbert Taylor when he was asked to take charge of a company that was facing bankruptcy.  With tremendous obstacles and handicaps facing the Club Aluminum Company, Herbert Taylor felt the company needed to develop in their organization something which their competitors would not have in equal amount.  They decided that it should be the character, dependability, and service mindedness of their personnel. In 1943, Eleven years later, The Four Way Test was adopted by Rotary International and subsequentially been translated into more than a hundred languages.
The next time we recite the Four Way Test, I invite us to listen to the words carefully.  Let each of us ask ourselves “How can I better incorporate these four statements into my daily life?”  Imagine how much better the world would be if more people took these words to heart.
By the way, the Club Aluminum Company succeeded in its efforts; it paid off its debts, emerged from bankruptcy, and became a successful company in the decades to follow.
