Support of organizations made possible through the generous donations of members of the community via Rotary Roses and Moonstruck

The Board of Directors met June 18 for regular business and to consider requests for support from various organizations. The directors voted to disburse $5,200 -- raised through the annual Rotary Roses and Moonstruck -- to organizations including:
  • Eye Care: Support in the amount of $2,000 for basic eye care services, supplies, and equipment for Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity. The organization provides eye care in Mexico and countries in Africa.
  • More Successful Lives, Stronger Communities: A request for $1,000 was approved to provide assistance with transportation of volunteers who work with and mentor at risk youth, juvenile offencers, ex-offenders, and inmates. Amicus, which works with Volunteers of America, helps these individuals in our cities to build more successful lives and stronger communities.
  • Armed Forces and Families: The Board voted to release all funds raised and on hand for the Beyond the Yellow Ribbon (BTYR) to the Campaign. The program provides food and holiday parties for members of the armed services and their families. Over several years, the Club has raised roughly $500 for the program in a dedicated fund. The Board will release all the funds to BTYR, and to close the account.
  • Legal Assistance -- Domestic Abuse, Family Law: A contribution of $1,000 will be made to Legal Assistance of Dakota County to support the organization’s mission of providing free legal assistance for low income people in the County who have civil legal needs in the areas of family law, including child and domestic abuse cases.
  • Education for Adults: South Suburban Adult Basic Education Programs will get $1,200 to assist with providing free education programs to adults seeking to obtain their GED, improve their literacy or learning English. Classes are offered in South St. Paul, West St. Paul and Inver Grove Heights. The money will be used to support scholarships that will offset the cost of the GED exams.
