Greeter this week: Jim Ferguson
The Uncle I Never Got to Meet
This week marks Remembrance Day in Canada, on Nov. 11th, and to mark that solemn date I'd like to share a little family history.
My Grandfather, Thomas Ferguson, farmed at Highgate, Saskatchewan, with his wife Susan.
They raised five very active boys (no girls were born), who went to school in North Battleford, played baseball and hockey, and helped out with chores on the farm.
When World War 2 broke out, and Canada joined the fighting to stop the Nazi war machine, all five boys went to the local war office to volunteer.
My Uncle Doug, who was later a Rotarian, (top left) and my Uncle Jack (middle bottom) were accepted into the Canadian Air Force and both were stationed in the British Isles.
My father, Hugh (top right), joined the Canadian Army and fought all the way into Germany by 1945.
Uncle Hilbert (bottom left) couldn't join the Armed Forces because of a medical disability, so he had to stay home and help out with the family farm.
My Uncle Gordon,(bottom right), who had a quiet humor and was very artistic (see his drawing, done when he was a young boy), joined the Regina Rifles Infantry, trained, and was sent to England with his group.

On D-Day, the Regina Rifles landed on the beaches in Normandy and advanced deeper into Europe, suffering heavy losses
On the outskirts of a small Belgian village, my Uncle Gordon was shot and killed by a German Sniper.

He never came back from the war.

Please join me in remembering all of our Canadian Forces sacrifices, in order to have a free and democratic Canada.

Stan Rogers
Musician
Stanley Allison "Stan" Rogers was a Canadian folk musician and songwriter. Rogers was noted for his rich, baritone voice and his finely crafted, traditional-sounding songs which were frequently inspired by Canadian history and the daily lives of working people, especially those from the fishing villages of the Maritime provinces and, later, the farms of the Canadian prairies and Great Lakes. Rogers died in a fire aboard Air Canada Flight 797 on the ground at the Greater Cincinnati Airport at the age of 33.

Members and guest attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring and entertaining weekly meetings.

A wonderful interview with Louise who I am a follower of but have not read her book in a while so this was a great reminder of her message!  Thank you.
Janice Vervaeke, Rotary E-Club of Canada One, D-5370

A meaningful THANK YOU is the best form of payment you can give or receive! Rotarians all over the world work on humanitarian projects and a simple thank you will bring tears to their eyes and help push them to the next good deed.
Gord Lewis, Rotary E-Club of Canada One, D-5370

This was a very inspiring meeting from all three videos--rotary minute, 209 seconds, and TED's measuring what it worthwhile or what really counts.  I have been motivated to rethink the things I will count today.
Simeon Norton

The speaker program was food for thought. I also liked the actual Food for Thought component very much. Scary almost that such a tiny planet can hold so many problems amongst the inhabitant. Makes me wonder if there is life on any of the other planet and what they would be like. Could we learn from them?
Elly Contreras, Rotary E-Club of Canada One, D-5370
