Greeter this week: Vicki Horsfield

On the Global Grins website, it states that a U.N. report found that the world has more cell phones that toothbrushes, and that billions of people in the world don't have toothbrushes. The poor in Guatemala make up part of that billion. Poor dental hygiene is linked to heart disease, malnutrition, stroke, diabetes - not to mention the loss of adult teeth. The first time a dental hygienist volunteered with our organization, Creating Opportunities for Guatemalans, she offered to clean all the kids' teeth. One of the questions she posed was, "How many times a day do you brush your teeth?" I was shocked to learn that several of our 8 and 10 year old children had never in their life brushed their teeth! To remedy this problem, we started a program in which these children have to brush their teeth under supervision during our after-school program. That required toothbrushes and Global Grins came to the rescue. They will provide to any volunteer going to any charitable organization 100 toothbrushes to take to that organization. The kids in our organization now have the potential to have better health and to keep their teeth long into adulthood.

Alberta dad creates impressive 'ice ship' to help his kids enjoy winter
A 41-year-old father of three is getting attention for an impressive boat he built by hand despite living in land-locked Alberta. But this boat isn't meant to set sail in the water, even if that's what it was built with. That's right, it's an ice ship.

For some reason, I was not convinced that the floating city concept is sustainable or environmentally friendly. A very expensive dream for a minority of the rich world population.
Jean Michel Crepin, Rotary E-Club of Canada One, D-5370

The Inspirational Moment was a great start to the new year; the Canadians article on the Ice Caverns under Montréal was amazing; the Speakers Program on Floating Cities was interesting particularly for coastal city's studying potential impacts of sea level rise.
Andy Adams, RC of Campbell River, BC, D-5020

Enjoyed the Paul Harris video - in addition to what he said, interesting facts about his desk from Australian Rotarians and his Garden of Goodwill. Learned that there are differences in Canadian French and France French words - had no idea as I don't speak french.
Sheryl McAlister, RC of Summerville Evening, NC, USA, D-7770

I am in Buffalo, New York, watching Paul Harris from the vault... was very cool!

Charities with perfect scores
The exceptional charities on this list execute their missions in a fiscally responsible way while adhering to good governance and other best practices that minimize the chance of unethical activities. Each has earned perfect scores for its Financial Health and its Accountability & Transparency. Those two scores then translate into a perfect 100 point overall score. Less than one percent of the thousands of charities rated by Charity Navigator have earned perfect scores.
We applaud these charities for exceeding industry standards and outperforming other organizations performing similar work.
