Greeter this week: Delwen Stander

Paradigm shifts involve, by their very nature, a dramatic change in the way we think and act. They are seldom easy, and only sometimes are they welcomed in our lives.
As of the end of January, my law firm went "virtual", to the maximum extent possible, and we have closed our traditional offices.  I still have a small office elsewhere, my staff still has small offices elsewhere, we still have physical meeting capabilities, but we will be connected primarily through the internet.  As before, I still meet with clients, and still go to Court, and still conduct mediations, etc., but the bulk of what I do is done via the latest in electronic communications and connections.  Is it a big deal?  You bet.  Did it concern me? Absolutely. But, does it excite the heck out of all of us in my firm, and the clients who have heard of the change?  Actually, yes.  It provides greater flexibility and convenience for us internally, it frees up time for me to concentrate on the practice of law, and my clients have better access to my services, often right at their places of business instead.  It is a fundamental change in the way I practice, and I welcome it.
As e-Club members, we know all about this type of paradigm shift.  We almost all began in a terra club, where we met in traditional meetings, conducted the bulk of our club business face-to-face, and used technology fairly sparingly.  All of us now have become accustomed to doing meetings on the internet, having fellowship on-line, and learning about how we can make an impact on our world through the clever use of technology.  And we know that this is successful, because we do almost all of the things that other clubs do, including fund raising, projects, and networking in the broadest Rotary way.  We have embraced 21st century ideas about communication.
I say, and I know I speak for many in doing so, that the shift from terra to e-club has been a positive change for me, and for any of you visiting our meeting, you too may welcome it one day in your Rotary life...

Great presentation by Rose George.
As we are assisting providing clean water to the people of Subirana, Honduras, and as other Rotarians are doing the same in other parts of the world, we need to also pay attention to keeping their environment as clean as possible. Maybe both projects need to be very closely tied and one cannot be done without also implementing the other one.

It's wonderful to have a perspective shift resulting from a 14 minute speaker program. Sanitation & human feces have taken on whole new meanings.
Velma Noble, RCCHP, D-5360

Mistakenly assumed fresh water would cure all, never considered sanitation as a huge killer.
Jo-Ann Benson, North Vancouver, BC
A good selection of videos. Living in Canmore I particularly enjoyed the clip about the Nordic Centre. A very thought provoking speaker program.

A Little Humor

A wife was making a breakfast of fried eggs for her husband.
Suddenly, her husband burst into the kitchen. 'Careful,' he said, 'CAREFUL! Put in some more butter! Oh my gosh! You're cooking too many at once. TOO MANY! Turn them! TURN THEM NOW! We need more butter. Oh my gosh! WHERE are we going to get MORE BUTTER? They're going to STICK! Careful. CAREFUL! I said be CAREFUL! You NEVER listen to me when you're cooking! Never! Turn them! Hurry up!
Are you CRAZY? Have you LOST your mind? Don't forget to salt them. You know you always forget to salt them. Use the! salt. USE THE SALT! THE SALT!'
The wife stared at him. 'What in the world is wrong with you? You think I don't know how to fry a couple of eggs?'
The husband calmly replied, 'I just wanted to show you what it feels like when I'm driving.'

Sewing skills ease job woes in South African province
While the Valley of 1,000 Hills outside Durban, South Africa, offers stunning scenery to visitors, job prospects for many Zulu people in the area are bleak. In the province of KwaZulu-Natal, the Rotary Club of Hillcrest, South Africa, addressed the unemployment rate in the community by joining with a local group to offer sewing classes for seniors unable to travel for employment.
