Greeter this week: Vicki Horsfield

On June 3 of this year, an active volcano in Guatemala erupted like it had never erupted before. Although it spews smoke four or five times a day and erupts quite frequently, lava had previously only flowed about a third of the way down the side of the volcano. On June 3, the eruption was so great that lava reached the bottom of the volcano, wiping out several villages in its path. I recently went with Dr. David Tufts through the devastation to one of the buried villages. The site was overwhelming and extremely sad. Although the government called off the search for victims two weeks after the eruption, surviving family members are still digging out what they can find of their homes in an effort to find remains of family members. As we walked over the lava and ash, we had to wear masks to protect ourselves from breathing the gases still coming off the lava. Even so, the smell of death was evident. We heard stories of how people just grabbed their children and ran. Some made it but many did not - either overcome by the gases or because they were not able to outrun the flow of lava.  The surviving villagers estimate that more than 1500 people are still unaccounted for. The above picture is/was the local elementary school.

Are we alone in the Universe? If so, we must appreciate this Planet of ours...
Nosberto Lou, RC of Guatemala North, D-4250

I love the idea of gleaning of fields and of restaurants donating leftovers to the homeless and any less fortunate human being.
Steven Sandlin, RC of Decatur Daybreak, D-6860

Michael Crossland grew up beating the odds each and everyday to live another day. It all started at 11 months old. Michael has realized his joy has been from giving back each and everyday and grateful for every moment he can bring joy to others through his humanitarian work.
Michael Thomas, RC of Stony Plain, D-5370

I suggest that the reason we prefer to focus on Canada's role in the "underground railway" when it comes to the issue of slavery, is that this is a more modern example, and is more indicative of our recent history as a country (occurring, as it did, around the time of our actual confederation).  This story of the execution of a slave, and any controversy regarding the proof of her crime (which we cannot possibly accurately review from this vantage point in 2018) is an aberration, and should not cause present day self-flagellation.  We are a generally a good country, with sound values, which treats all people with respect.
Delwen Stander, Rotary E-Club of Canada One, D-5370
