Greeter this week: James (Jim) Ferguson

A Canadian Moment
When it was announced that Gord Downie, the lead singer and lyricist of the Tragically Hip, was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, it sent a shock wave throughout all of Canada.
The band, who are from Kingston, Ontario, have toured through Canada since 1984 when the group of school friends decided to start their own group.
The Hip have written about Canada and its people for the last 32 years, with songs such as Bobcaygeon, 50 Mission Cap, and Wheat Kings, just to name a few.
Gord Downie’s oncologist gave a cautious “go-ahead” to do one last very short tour, with only Canadian dates and ending in Kingston on August 20th.
My son, Ryan, owner of our E-Club website sponsor Black Flag Consulting,  grew up listening to the Hip, and surprised me with tickets and a trip to the final concert.
Large TV screens were set up outside the arena, and about 35,000 people came to downtown Kingston to watch the CBC’s live coverage of the concert, with close to 12 million Canadians across Canada tuned in as well.

Inside the K-Rock Centre, it was emotional and exhilarating, as the Hip played some of their greatest hits for close to three hours.

Truly, it was a historical Canadian moment, bonding father and son, and people from across this great nation, together.

Comments from our Guests and Members
Members and guest attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring and entertaining weekly meetings.
Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you send us your comments please?

I enjoyed this speaker who make put the worlds problems in perspective and in a humorous way.
Sam Theocharis, RC of Festival City Stratford, D-6030

“How not to be Ignorant”
This meeting had a wonderful selection of short videos but the speakers program was most entertaining and informative. An interesting perspective on how the world is seen and what we need to do to change our glasses.

Robert Boyden, RC of Canmore, D-5360

Interesting how we have learned information that is biased, especially from the news media and our education systems.
Larry Reynolds, RC of Campbell River, D-2050

“The DNA Journey”
Wow. This one caught me. I really was got into it. I do think it should be something that everyone should try to do as I doubt most know their true background.
Craig Fowler, RC of Barrie, D-7010

I like the diversity and mix of speakers that are offered each week.
Each time I attend one of your meetings, it is a make-up for me, I am impressed and will keep coming back.

Anita Ratchinsky, RC of St. Albert, D-5370

SHELTERBOX AND ROTARY CLUBS TAKE ACTION FOLLOWING EARTHQUAKE IN ITALY

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck central Italy early Wednesday, killing more than 240 people and trapping an unknown number beneath rubble. Tremors were felt as far away as Rome, 100 km (65 miles) southwest of the quake's epicenter.
International disaster relief agency and Rotary International project partner ShelterBox is sending a response team from its headquarters in the United Kingdom to the remote mountainous area of Italy where the destruction is most severe. The response team will arrive Friday, 26 August, to assess the area's needs.

Rotary is more than a club, it is a worldwide network of Rotarians sharing ideas and working together for the benefit of those less fortunate.
Our E-Club is part of a District, which covers Northern Alberta, Eastern British Columbia and a small part of Western Saskatchewan. Our District is governed by a District Governor, who uses our model for an example to others, advices us on Rotary policies and participates in our Fellowship.
One of the duties of a DG is to meet with the board of each club and addresses our club members, informing us about Rotary news and our annual Theme.
We are excited to announce, that DG Laura Morie will be meeting with our board on Tuesday, October, 18, prior to our Fellowship Assembly, during which she will make her presentation.
During this Fellowship Assembly we may also hear from Biswanath Chakrabarty who will be on site in India giving us an update on our Education project there.

Tuesday, October 18, 6:00 pm Mountain Time.
Via GoToMeeting. Link will be posted.

Food for Thought

“There is nothing intangible about Rotary: It is reality itself. To give is to receive;
to lose oneself is to find oneself; to be happy is to serve. These are old truths…for
the individual…and the mass, whether application be in the exchange of goods,
toil, knowledge, or love.”

— The Meaning of Rotary, THE ROTARIAN, November 1921
