World Polio Day and PolioPlus
As all Rotarians know since 1985 Rotary has been very closely associated with the work to eradicate polio. Although there are only three countries left where polio is endemic we have recently been made aware of an outbreak in Papua New Guinea. Al Jazeera, a news organisation, reported on its website that "Papua New Guinea (PNG) is gearing up for a nationwide vaccination campaign to protect citizens against polio 18 years after the disease was eradicated from the country".
Nine cases were found in remote parts of the country where polio vaccine coverage is low. Sanitation, hygiene and clean water are serious challenges in the region, which adds to the difficulty of controlling the highly infectious virus. More recently an infected child was diagnosed in the capital Port Moresby.
Vaccination has begun and the Papua New Guinea Post Courier reports "The polio vaccination campaign in Papua New Guinea is organized by the National Department of Health (NDOH) and the Provincial Health Authorities, with support from the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, Rotary International and the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI). The GPEI is spearheaded by national governments, WHO, Rotary International, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and UNICEF".
October 24 is World Polio Day so this outbreak serves as a reminder that Rotary's work is not done yet so consider making a donation to PolioPlus this October and remember, for every dollar you contribute for polio eradication the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation gives two more.

Comments from our Guests and Members
Members and guest attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring and entertaining weekly meetings.
Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you send us your comments please?

It is an interesting concept, about having home care rather than spending time in hospitals.  That should be the way of the future.
Judy Brown, RC of Edmonton Riverview, D-5370

After spending 10 days with my sister-in-law, I saw the benefit of home care when every day she received the service of a home care professional. And it happened while she was our hostess. She could not have done the service herself and would have had to be in the hospital.
Jean-Michel Crepin, Rotary E-Club of Canada One, D-5370

Always enjoy hearing about Rotary Exchange students lives in a new country and I look forward to reading more about (member) Jeff MacFarlane's daughter's experiences during her year in Italy.
David Werrett, Rotary E-Club of Canada One, D-5370

I think that in many cases, with proper care, people recover better when treated at home.
Jim Williams, RC of Barrie, Ontario, D-7010
