Greeter this week: Nicole Balan

ImageGreetings guests and fellow e-club members!  I originally joined Rotary a few years ago when I moved to London, Ontario.  I enjoyed my time with the London South club and attended many other clubs throughout southern Ontario, as well as Sault Ste. Marie and Arizona.  I also had the pleasure of attending various Rotary Leadership training courses in the U.S. and Ontario where I met Rotarians from far and wide and gathered a broader sense of rotary.  Being a single mother, my son’s schedule was providing a challenge for me to continue to faithfully attend my Friday morning breakfasts at London South club.
I was extremely excited when Juan Carlos, my original sponsor into London South, happened to mention the e-club.  What a blessing!   The e-club allows me to maintain my membership in Rotary and be there for my son!
One of the interesting projects I had the opportunity to be involved in while at London South club was to participate in the Avoidable Blindness Project  that Burton club and VOSH manage.  By speaking with optometrists and putting containers in local library branches, the club collects used eyeglasses for recycling and use for patients in Mexico. There is also an opportunity to travel and participate in the project, usually in March, every year. This is on my “bucket list” for the future, as is attending a Rotary International Convention abroad.

I was inspired by Tanya Wolff’s marathon running for Rotary at Disney this year.  This is another “stretch goal” of mine-to eventually walk a half-marathon at Disney.
Well, welcome to everyone. Have a wonderful meeting and a wonderful week.
Blessings and Namaste,
Nicole

Let’s hear from our Members and Guests

Each week we receive comments from guests and Prospective members, who attend our e-meetings. We like to share some of these comments with you.

“The polio plus campaign continues to boggle my mind with its complexity and the enormity of the situation. The film reminded me of that and of the incredible work that Rotary is doing here...

Rotary Help World another GREAT program that I don't think many Rotarians know about...

And I found the video on the Tarahumara absolutely remarkable...”
Herky Cutler, Charter Member

“The format of your e-club is fantastic. I like how it melds the e-club experience with a bit of a traditional meeting.

The breadth of topics in the video presentation provides an interesting cross section”.
Philip Laitar, RC Woodstock – D7080

“The video about perception of "things" based on words (the sightless man, but not a man who is "blind") hit my weak spot very effectively.”
Chris Langley, Member RECCO

Announcements

Board Meeting
Our next Board meeting will be June 10 and will be the second Monday of each month throughout the summer. Please watch contact PE Bruce Kleeberger if you would like to attend the meeting.

Message from President Elly Contreras
There are still a lot of misconceptions about e-clubs. Many Terra clubs do not know how e-clubs function, how e-members serve or how their own club benefits from e-club attendance.
When you do visit terra clubs to talk about e-clubs, please be sure to emphasize that you are there to inform, not to recruit.
A Power Point presentation is available to aid your presentation.

4.5 Million Dollars for the foundation raised in Edmonton
RI President Tanaka spent his mother’s day weekend in Edmonton and took part in a series of events.Upon his arrival on Friday May 10, Tenaka visited a school in Calmar, and took part in an Interact event. On Saturday he, and many Rotarians and their family from the Edmonton region helped with the spring Clean-up in Fort Edmonton Park. As many as six of our e-club members participated in the clean up.
After the work was done, all volunteered were treated to a BBQ and had the honor of meeting President Tanaka in person.

ImagePresident Tanaka was equally impressed by the large presence of our e-club members (six in total) as he was by the fact that his picture was taken with a Nikon camera.

E-club members volunteering for the park clean up wrote about their experience:

“I have known Elly and Ramiro for years, we all lived in the Spruce Grove, Stony Plain area. I hadn't yet had a chance to actually meet, "face to face" other members of our e-club until Saturday!

The very first person I met was Glenn Walker, and just when we realized we were fellow e-club members; Ross and Darlene Hallett drove up, to complete our group of 6.
The weather was beautiful, and after cleaning our section of Fort Edmonton park, we had a BBQ with a live band playing.

I met the RI President, various other Rotary dignitaries, old friends that I hadn't seen in awhile, but best of all met my new friends from the e-club; A fantastic Rotary Day!“
Jim Ferguson

“I really enjoyed the chance to get to know some of my fellow e-Rotarians. I got to spend time with Jim and got to know him as a person. I really enjoyed that aspect. I hope we find a way to do it more often. Meeting the RI President was indeed a pleasure and getting a chance to have my picture taken with him and some of my fellow club members was just the icing on the cake”.
Glenn Walker

“We had a great experience at Rotary Day at the Fort Edmonton Park on May 11. Those e-members who attended indicated that they would like more social activity.  I am going to arrange for that.

We made a short video of our workers at  Fort Edmonton Park

Our contributions to the Permanent Fund are returned to the District three years after they are received. The District then allocates these funds to SHARE and District Designated Funds.
What local charity is funded by the District?  One example is the Fort Edmonton Park, that was partly developed using Foundation funds.
Six members of our club helped Rotary President Tanaka do a clean-up of the Park.”

District 5370 raises $4.5 Million for the Rotary Foundation

The main event for the President’s invitation by DG Kevin and for Rotarians from D5370, was the Million Dollar Dinner. The intention was to raise the money in form of donations and new pledges to the TRF Benefactor program.

Members Frank Yakimchuk and his wife Tammy were in attendance in Sherwood Park; Frank writes about his experience:

“The added opportunity to meet RI President Tanaka up close and personal, the chance to dine with fellow Rotarians and to network with all the quests resulted in a memorable occasion for Tammy and I. I spoke with a few people that I knew from previous District Conferences and enjoying the positive vibes in the "house” in the mean time.

PDG Ross Tyson, did a tremendous job keeping us moving along with the evening’s program, dinner was superb and the table conversations were even better. The featured guest of the night, RI President Tanaka was ushered to the stage, a small man in statue, he demonstrated a spring in his step despite his busy schedule and was proof that age brings wisdom. His speech, entirely in English earned him a standing ovation for its content and his passion for humanity.

The climax forImage the Million Dollar Dinner came with the pulling off of the sticky strips covering the details of an oversized check. The amount unveiled at that moment, was 4.5 million dollars, this was comprised of both cash donations and future pledges. I was amazed that with only a year to work from its inception to the diary date that so much could be achieved by a relative few. It does show that the spirit of "service above self" is alive and well in District 5370.

A special tribute goes out to RI President Tanaka who has a gentle touch, leads by example and succeeds with a quiet confidence in all his activities both private and public”
