Greeter this week: Anre McIntosh

Hello everyone
I have been thinking of the Rotary moto "Service Above Self" and how it is demonstrated and incorporated in our life. As Rotarians, it is through our Rotary projects and sponsored events. For those outside of Rotary it can be through helping others. The examples I have seen come from the world of Triathlon. I was in Edmonton this summer as an official at the Elite races.  What struck me was the presence of Elite athletes acting as guides for para-athletes. The time and devotion these individuals took to assist their partner was amazing to watch during and after the race.
I also saw this at local events, older athletes (teenagers) assisting younger athletes (4-6 year olds) around the course as "buddies".
I think all of us should look for these types of opportunities within all aspect of our life: inside and outside of Rotary. For those of us with children or grandchildren, take them along when you volunteer. Help them build service to others into their lives.
If you don't have the time or ability to be an on the ground volunteer consider making a donation to the Rotary foundation, as this will service to others through Rotary projects.

Love the convenience of attending while I am away and looking for interesting reading material.
Sarah Pruckl, District 5060

Dame Ellen MacArthur's surprising discovery learned while breaking the round the world solo sailing record is literally a sea change in the way society functions. As a fellow sailor, and inhabitant of this fragile Mother Earth the vision of a circular economy makes perfect sense. Undeniably we cannot continue on our path of using all the resources this earth, our home has. If we do then we as a species and by result all living things are doomed. We will be the next Mars, a dusty speck surrounding a glorious sun shining for no one. Visionaries like Ellen, whose compelling story offers an alternative to the doomsday scenario must be championed. They are our hope and our future.
Lou Spizzirri, Rotary E-Club of Canada One, D-5370

This is the first Rotary e meeting that I have attended. It was an excellent experience.
Jim Maxwell, RC of West Ottawa, Ontario, D-7040

So important to provide clean water, the bio sand filters were designed at the University of Calgary. The Center for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology (CAWST) now promotes them and teaches water purification.  As they can be built on site they are affordable and simple to operate.
