Greeter this week: Jean-Michel Crepin

A very long time ago it seems, before mobile phones, fax machines, GMO and when we did not think of managing the environment or human resources, a few of us were invited at the Petroleum Club in Calgary for an informal meeting with a few oil company's CEOs interested in investing in the oil sands in Fort McMurray. It was the time when protecting the environment was not seen by those companies as a cost to be managed. There were no environmental ministries and all provinces invested heavily in environmental research.
Many of us walked the pristine bush, muskegs and spruce forests, taking lichen, rain, snow, water and soil samples. We partnered with the natives and corporations alike to best understand the region potentials and especially the impacts of development. What happened since does not correspond well to the initial dream but nonetheless, many jobs were created, Alberta flourished and Albertans and Canadians benefited from those northern resources.
Whatever the politics of the day and the errors of the past, we are seeing considerable hardship here right at our doorsteps. The city is ablaze and many Rotarians are getting involved directly in providing help. In addition to this we know that money will be needed and that there is a good case to be made to get Rotary involved. And as I welcome you to this meeting, please consider getting involved in whatever form.

If we can grasp this and admit we are wrong (a lot of the time!!), we would feel so free!! We put so much pressure on ourselves to be right - and we miss out on some great and wonderful lessons in life when we stay stuck on being right.
Vicki Horsfield, Rotary E-Club of Canada One, D-5370

This talk reminds me of the motto of a consultant working for a very large corporation:
"Often wrong, never in doubt".

Jean Michel Crepin, Rotary E-Club of Canada One, D-5370

I gained insight into myself. I loved the humor and the topic!
Susan Shaw, RC of Barrie, D-7010

I appreciated the two short videos on Polio Plus. Confirmation that the efforts of Rotary are achieving success and the World will soon be polio free. Also a very interesting documentary on the Franklin expedition, especially given the recent interest in the attempts to locate the second ship.
Robert Boyden, RC of Canmore, D-5360

As life goes on and our youthful dreams sometimes do not work out as we had hoped, Kathryn Schultzs comment on stepping out of the box we set for ourselves will bring great happiness and new adventures in our lives. Now these can work out as we think they should or even fail, but the effort was the lesson and the joy in participating in life.
Admitting we were wrong is not the end of the world. It is the beginning of a new one.

Lynne Ternosky, Rotary E-Club of Canada One, D-5370
