Welcome to our December 9 to 15 weekly meeting

Greeter this week: Elly Contreras
Snowbirding in Mexico is not what many people think it is.
Sure, we do enjoy our daily swim in the pool and drink Margaritas with our friends. But when you spend your winter in a country such as Mexico, where there is still a lot of poverty, the Rotarian in you comes out and you can't help but getting involved.
There are many projects to sink your teeth into; Orphanages, homes for ex drug addicts, flood victims and many projects involving children in neighborhoods where poverty, domestic violence and drug and alcohol abuse prevails.
Ramiro and I are also very much involved in Project Amigo, an education project for poor, mostly indigenous children of whom many are from single parent families. Many of these children live in migrant labour camps for Sugar Cane Cutters, who drive up from the afar south and spend their winter working in the field. Their housing conditions are atrocious.

We had the opportunity to deliver running shoes to 50 some kindergarten kids so they would be able to participate in the Annual Independence Day parade this past November.
Many of them don’t wear shoes on a daily basis, and for many, these may be the only shoes they receive all year.
When we see the looks on these children’s faces it's all too clear how good we have it in our little world. So we stop and take a moment to be grateful and share our wealth.

As you attend this meeting, please keep those who need help in mind, especially as we approach the Holiday season, during which we tend to live in abundance.
Enjoy this meeting and come back soon.

BTW, December 10th is not only my birthday it also Human Rights Day

Let’s hear from our Guests and Members
Each week we receive comments from guests and members, who attend our e-meetings. We like to share some of these comments with you.

“The most fascinating thing about the e-club format is how easy it is to "get lost" through the links. And I find there is almost a serendipity to it. I started with viewing the Alliance for Smiles video (very moving) and found myself watching the story of "Educating Yorkshire - Mushy Finds His Voice" (Note entirely sure how I found it). Completely unrelated stories but a thread connects a theme. That being to overcome adversity with the help with local and global networks, the pure joy of achieving the goal by both the individual and sharing with the community.
It is all too easy to spend more than the 45 minutes when you add up the time "outside" the meeting program.
Well done!”
Philip Laitar, RC Kitchener – D7080

“The Holland video was hilarious. I also thoroughly enjoyed the Kampala video”.
Cynthia de Boer, RC Red Deer East – D5360

“The two videos on "Life vest" and "What is Water" are great videos; So much that I have decided that when I do a make-up through E-club Canada One that I sit down with my 11 year old and 15 year old and have them watch it with me.
These two videos (and the messages they convey) should be played in every highschool as well as every work place.
The one message that I thought was important is that in education it isn't just "what you learn" but "how you think". Your degree, diploma, vocational training is important but "learning to think" must be a part of every educational program.
Philip Laitar, RC Woodstock - D7080”

Announcements

Another Program Supported by YOUR Rotary Foundation

The first VTT from D5370 which will travel to Honduras in April will be led by Edmonton Glenora Rotarian, Donna Ducommun.  Donna’s vocation as a retired banker along with her previous exposure to a microfinance project in Guatemala positions her well to lead a team to assist the micro finance administration office as well as loan recipients operating small start up businesses.
The balance of her team include Elly Contreras and Juan Carlos Reyes of our e-club, as well as Marcela Mandeville of Edmonton, and Luz Marcela Torres of the RC of N. Battleford

We will keep you posted on the preparations of the team’s departure late April.

Greetings, announcements and articles
Thank you to those who have sent us greetings, announcements and other articles for the weekly e-meetings. With your help we are able to continue to produce stellar meeting material.
If you have not sent us a welcome message recently, we encourage you to do so. It’s an oportunity to share your thoughts, tell us about your family and your Rotary experiences.

Our webhost Clubrunner, allows us a limited number of characters for our entire meeting so we ask that you keep your text to a minimum. Greetings 100-150 words. It will also keep the interest of our readers, who according to statistict do not read long text messages, but prefer photos and videos.

As Albert Einstein once said: "as simple as possible, but no simpler"

A Little Humor
Yesterday I was at Walmart in Arizona, buying a large bag of Purina dog chow for my loyal pet, Owen the Wonder Dog. I was in the check-out line when a woman behind me asked if I had a dog.
So because I'm a retired Snowbird and have little to do, on impulse, I told her that no, I didn't have a dog, I was starting the Purina Diet again.
I added that I probably shouldn't, because I ended up in the hospital last time, but that I'd lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms.
I told her that it was essentially a Perfect Diet and that the way that it works is, to load your pants pockets with Purina Nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete, (certified), so it works well and I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in line was now enthralled with my story.)
Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care because the dog food poisoned me. I told her no, I had stopped to pee on a fire hydrant and a car hit me.
The cashier at Walmart reported me and now they won't let me shop there anymore.

Food for Thought
WHAT IF… how you start your day will determine how successful your day is?

RESEARCH SAYS: Your first two hours impact your whole day’s productivity. Career and workplace experts compiled a list of 12 things you should do at the start of a workday.  They are:
1.    Arrive on time.
2.    Remind yourself of your core purpose for the day.
3.    Take a deep breath and meditate.
4.    Eat a proper breakfast.
5.    Listen to an energizing song and smile.
6.    Organize your day from a clean slate.
7.    Be present, avoid multi-tasking.
8.    Check in with you colleagues.
9.    Organize your workspace.
10.   Don’t be distracted by your inbox.
11.   Listen to your voicemail.
12.   Place important calls and send urgent emails.

TRY THIS: Choose at least five of the above suggestions to work on this week. Did you notice a difference in your workday?
