Greeter this week: Sharon Blaker

Good Day Fellow Rotarians,
I was fortunate enough to participate in the 2018 International Rotary Convention in Toronto, Ontario.  The weather was pleasant and the city welcoming.  What a buzz to be amongst 27,000 Rotarians from around the world! My name tag opened up a great opportunity to dispel some of the misconceptions about e-clubs.  I took every opportunity to enlighten fellow Rotarians about who we are and what we do.
The general session speakers were mind blowing - from Princess Anne to Laura Bush to Dr. Ghebreyesus from WHO. Polio updates and a number of projects were highlighted.  All were inspiring and, in my opinion, none more so than the Rotaractors.  We are in good hands with these young people stepping up into Rotary.  I really enjoyed the mix of young and old-- traditional and progressive speakers--including many Rotary alumni.  Topics followed Rotary's areas of focus.  There are exciting times ahead!

Another highlight was the hosted evening by the Toronto East Club and I would like to thank President Jim Anastasiadis and his committee, in particular John Ryall.  We had a very informative tour of Evergreen Brick Works, a restored brick factory which utilized sustainable practices.  About 40 Rotarians then experienced a wonderful private catered evening with wine, beer and live entertainment. It was an opportunity to make new friends. The view from the patio was stunning.
A visit from Prime Minister Trudeau was an unscheduled surprise and he accepted a Rotary award on behalf of Canadians for our contribution to eradicate polio.
Take the opportunity when you can to attend an International Convention. It will revitalize your Rotarian life!

A great idea which has become very common in Canada. I think turning off the tap might mean producing less plastic in the future. I am a firm believer that all plastic should have a recycling value placed on it to the consumer.

Some great stories this week.  I enjoyed the story of how the Cuban government vaccinated everyone in Cuba and it led to Dr Sabin convincing governments and others, including Rotary, that a country wide vaccination was the only way to rid a country of polio. The video on Understanding Aboriginal Identity offers a great insight into the world of Aboriginal people in Canada.
David Werrett, Rotary E-Club of Canada One, D-5370

We need to focus on addressing the cause of ocean plastic pollution not just the symptoms.  We can all support this by eliminating the use of single use plastic.
Ian Johnston, RC of Kiama, Australia
