Greeter this week: Ken Hunter

Hello everyone! As a young 20-something in the 1980's I worked in the telecommunications field in Vancouver. The company at that time (BC Tel) always had a goal of giving back to the community. As employees we were encouraged to get involved in the community both in time as well as monetary. In 2002 after 20 years at the company I took a personal left-turn (a turn into the 'other' fork in the road) and chose to enter the world of the entrepreneur.
However, the cast had been set. Getting involved will always be one of the pillars of my business.
As a self-employed Realtor in the Fraser Valley since 2003, my personal goals were (and are) to continue to give back to my community as well as to the larger world-wide community by whatever means I can.
Rotary is an amazing vehicle to harness the power of focused individuals to work together to meet goals.
I have learned by being a Rotarian the power of a group of focused people who see a need and are able to harness the Rotary blueprint and experience to make things happen....without a middleman. Find a need, work to provide and make it happen.
Our Rotary e-Club Canada One is a perfect example of a diverse group of individuals, in far-flung locations working together to meet it's goals.
I am proud to be serving on the International Project Committee and the 'Pure Water' project. Clean-water throughout the world is and will continue to be a challenge for a lot of villages. The Pure Water project is working with a club in Honduras as well as reaching out to other stakeholders in order to bring clean water to this village. Collaboration at work.

Unbelievable journey of an Afghan man being smuggled to Australia.
Tom McCasland, RC of Lafayette, Louisiana, D-6200

Worldwide, more than 748 million people live without access to clean water and at least 3,000 children die each day from diarrheal diseases caused by unsafe water. Rotary is working to change that. For example, members used a Rotary grant to drill more than 20 clean-water wells and to repair another 30 in villages across Ghana. The project also included education about and treatment of Buruli ulcer, a debilitating infection that if untreated can lead to disability and death. Nearly 70,000 people will benefit from this initiative.
Sam Theocharis, RC of Festival City, Stratford, D-6330

Al Fedoriak's greeting tied in very nicely to the Speaker Video by Hugh Evans. As a Rotarian I would not have thought of myself as a "Global Citizen" but we can take encouragement from today's meeting to help guide us in our service en devour .
Philip Laitar, RC of Woodstock, D-7080

Enjoyed the balance, President Ravindran speech was great, motivating to improve our clubs and districts. The humor on e-mail spam was very amusing and touches on something many of us have always wanted to do.
Michael Ruttan, RC of Calgary South, D-5360

Rotary offers so much to the world.  We each do it differently and that helps us gain larger results.
Carol Record, RC of Grapevine, Texas, D-5790

CRISIS AT THE DOORSTEP
More than a million refugees from Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan streamed into the European Union last year. The sheer number of refugees has spurred a backlash in Austria against the Union's largely open-door policy. But Rotary members in a small Austrian town have been looking at the refugees as people, not problems. Learn more about what they have been doing to help, by clicking HERE
