News of outcome of past E-Club investment in a teacher in El Salvador
In Rotary we have invested in education and in several ways. Today I bring you a greeting from the teacher we hired in El Salvador who initiated a pilot project in small business education in Chalchuapa, El Salvador for over 100 students, for several years, using a school classroom Rotary in Canada had built previously.
After some time in adult education with the Board of Education in his state, he asked for help studying at night and on weekends, while we funded his daytime work that helped Grade 7-9 level students with computer and basic business education.
Armando writes today and sends us photos of his graduation from University as a "Professional" Computer engineer.
Also, all of his marginal income students have continued on in high school, supporting themselves with labour skills and understanding of business needs while living in an unsettled country.
The gratitude and excitement Armando shares with us is really due to your support of our E-Club Project Services proposal and encouragement from the Club President at the time, Bruce, along with the E-Club Board.

Joy to the world, peace on earth and good will to all!

Comments from our Guests and Members
Members and guest attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring and entertaining weekly meetings.
Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you send us your comments please?

Enjoyed the meeting. Speaker Margo Talbot's talk about defeating her mental illness by challenging herself to ice climb is similar to many physical and expressive arts programs being introduced into treatment programs for depression and other mental illness.
Gordon Lewis, Rotary E-Club of Canada One, D-5370

Margo transformation from depression to joy found in ice climbing impressed me deeply.  She found in ice climbing a metaphor for her life and the challenges she was facing.  This can give hope to all of us. We need to find a passion.
Lorne Crozon, RC of Regina Oskaya, D-5550

Attended program, What's so sexy about Math? Found the program very informative.  I really liked the Population Time Line of the planet earth as well as the 12 year old boy who has sewn over 700 teddy bears for hospital patients.  He is the type on child every parent prays for, one that makes a positive difference in our world.
Phyllip Pressey, Rotary E-Club of Canada One, D-5370

News from the Rotary E-Club Family

Our family Christmas celebration was a success.
Unfortunately not all members were able to attend but those who did had a great time.
Delwen, our Laureate Poet recited a most fitting poem to us.
Several of our members participated in the Ugly Christmas Sweater Contest, with the joint co-winners, Peter and Jim.
The Photo contest was a hoot, with Gord guessing the most correct photos.
One of the highlights was a video presentation about Creating Opportunities for Guatemalans. After which Doug presented Vicky a cheque of $1,500.00. which was soon changed to $2,000.00, as a result of the generous donations of our members, matched by the E-club.
Vicki was totally surprised and very grateful for our members and club's gesture. She will send us picture and a follow up report.
For those how missed the Christmas Fellowship Assembly, a recording can be seen and heard on Youtube (Camera views are unfortunately not showing) but a picture of Jim's Christmas Sweater is included below...

Grab a Cab

With the holidays upon us, I would like to share a personal experience with my friends about drinking and driving. This is a first for me, as I normally don't preach to others. Some of us may have had brushes with the authorities from time to time on the way home after a "social session" out with friends. ?Well, two days ago I was out for an evening with friends and had several cocktails followed by some rather nice red wine. Feeling jolly I still had the sense to know that I may be slightly over the limit. That's when I did something that I've never done before - I took a cab home. Sure enough on the way home there was a police road block, but since it was a cab they waved it past and I arrived home safely without incident. This was a real surprise as I had never driven a cab before. I don't know where I got it and now that it's in my garage, I don't know what to do with it.

The Global Impact of World Polio Day
On 24 October 2016, Rotary celebrated its most successful World Polio Day. News outlets reported on global polio eradication efforts. Government buildings were lit up with the End Polio Now logo. Social media accounts shared stories of polio survivors. The Canadian government, along with former New York City, USA mayor, Michael Bloomberg, contributed millions to the fight to end polio.
In Atlanta, Georgia, USA, more than 200 people, along with thousands of others who tuned in online, attended the live World Polio Day event at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Some of the biggest names in polio eradication reflected on recent progress and discussed what needs to be done to end the disease for good.
