Greeter this week: Gord Lewis
Welcome fellow Rotarians and guests to our E-Club weekly meeting.
I chose the photo of myself in the "PROUD MEMBER" frame because I am proud to be part of the Rotary family. One of the many things that Rotary members can be proud of is the on-going project to eliminate polio from the world.
October 24th is WORLD POLIO DAY. This is the assigned birth date of Dr. Jonas Salk (the discoverer of the polio vaccine which was released for general use in 1955).  There is no cure for polio, only vaccines to prevent it.
Some interesting facts about Rotary's fight to eliminate this disease:

  - Rotary started the Polio Plus campaign in 1985 and partnered with WHO, US Center for Disease Control and UNICEF to work for polio prevention worldwide.
  - Rotary has raised over $1.5 billion and with its partners have immunized over 2.5 billion children in 122 countries.
  - In 1988 over 350,000 new cases were reported worldwide and in 2015 that has been reduced to only 75.
  - It requires only 60 cents U.S. to immunize 1 child
  - Only 3 endemic countries remain - Afghanistan, Pakistan & Nigeria
  - Rotary not only contributes money but organizes and assists in immunization campaigns
  - Rotary has lead the campaign to motivate NGO's like Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and governments from over 200 countries to raise over $7.2 Billion
  - Canada has committed $250 million for polio eradication from 2013 to 2018
  - Currently your donation to the Polio Plus program will be matched 2 to 1 by the Gates Foundation and the Government of Canada - so your $1 becomes $5
  - Your donation is eligible for Paul Harris recognition

What will you do to help celebrate World Polio Day? We are 99.9% of the way to complete this project _ LET'S FINISH THE JOB
If you need assistance in how to donate to this fund please contact me at any time, at gelbal@shaw.ca

Thank you and enjoy the rest of the meeting but remember Polio Plus needs your help.

Enjoyed Peter Denooy's article re the Edmonton Rotary Club's wheelchair project to the Dominican Republic; Inspirational Moment of Eagle Energy for the Navajo Nation was fantastic; Little Humor of Senior Texting Codes was "classic!"; and the Rotary Jukebox of Andrea Bocelli & Sarah Brightman singing "Time to Say Goodbye" was breathtaking. Thank You!

"Toilet Humor is Serious Business"
It was a different talk than I had expected which was a good thing.

Craig Fowler, RC of Barrie, D-7010

Ernesto, hits the nail on the head by using the skills and talent within a community for successful economic development.  Build the support from within and not imposing outside views to compete with the community skills.
Phyllip Pressey, Rotary E-Club of Canada One, D-5370

Given that today was the "Because I am a Girl" international focus day, the TED talk on the importance of Female Super Heroes was particularly profound.  Well done!
