As District Governor Elect for D5370 and the E-Club of Canada One I am so pleased to be your greeter this week.
This is such a busy time in our Rotary year.  An exciting time though as we reflect on our successes of 2013-14  as we Engaged Rotary and Changed Lives and prepare to Light Up Rotary in 2014-15.
I am a member of the Rotary Club of Edmonton East  was President in 2000-2001, Assistant Governor 2002 – 2004, and GSE Team Leader to Australia in 2011.  My classification is Food Consulting.  I have a Degree in Home Economics from the University of Manitoba and spent a career in agricultural marketing and promotion.
Hopefully I will meet some of you in person at our District Conference October 2nd – 4th in Edmonton, Alberta.

Tuktoyaktuk has books!
Mothers and their preschool children filed in to the Tuk Community Library this past week. Each child who had their book had it held tightly under their arms, walking from home to the library as they came to hear the story “The Little Engine that Could” read to them.
One mother shared: ”My child had her book safely tucked under her pillow and night. We have never owned a book.”
Rotary’s Community Champion, Audrey Walker reports:
"Now that the books have arrived, I am receiving calls daily about how the parents can register their children. Nine more children were registered yesterday and more are coming in tomorrow. I expect by the end of July to have 96 of 108 children registered."
35 children in another Beaufort Sea Community are waiting for sponsors.

Give a child a book for a 5 years for a pledge of $250.  Join us via GoToMeeting on June 16 to hear from Audrey herself.

A Little Humor
Generous lawyer
A local United Way office realized that the organization had never received a donation from the town's most successful lawyer. The person in charge of contributions called him to persuade him to contribute.
"Our research shows that out of a yearly income of at least $500,000, you give not a penny to charity. Wouldn't you like to give back to the community in some way?"
The lawyer mulled this over for a moment and replied, "First, did your research also show that my mother is dying after a long illness, and has medical bills that are several times her annual income?"
Embarrassed, the United Way rep mumbled, "Um ... no."
The lawyer interrupts, "or that my brother, a disabled veteran, is blind and confined to a wheelchair?"
The stricken United Way rep began to stammer out an apology, but was interrupted again.
"or that my sister's husband died in a traffic accident," the lawyer's voice rising in indignation, "leaving her penniless with three children?!"
The humiliated United Way rep, completely beaten, said simply, "I had no idea..."
On a roll, the lawyer cut him off once again, "So if I don't give any money to them, whyl should I give any to you?

New Members Corner
First names or Nicknames
From the earliest days of Rotary, members have referred to each other on a first-name basis. Since personal acquaintanceship and friendship are cornerstones of Rotary, it was natural that many clubs adopted the practice of setting aside formal titles in conversations among members; Individuals who normally would be addressed as Doctor, Professor, Mister, the Honorable or Sir are regularly called Joe, Bill, Charley or Jerry by other Rotarians. The characteristic Rotary club name badge fosters the first-name custom. In a few areas, such as Europe, club members use a more formal style in addressing fellow members. In other parts of the world, mainly in Asian and Latin American countries, the practice is to assign each new Rotarian a humorous nickname which relates to some personal characteristic or which is descriptive of the member's business or profession. A member nicknamed "Oxygen" is the manufacturer of chemical gas products. "Trees" is the nickname for the Rotarian in the lumber business, "Building" is the contractor, "Paper" is the stationery or office supply retailer. Other members might carry nicknames like "Muscles," "Foghorn" or "Smiles" as commentaries on their physical features. The nicknames are frequently a source of good-natured fun and fellowship. But whether a Rotarian is addressed by a given first name or a nickname, the spirit of personal friendship is the initial step, which opens doors to all other opportunities for service.

Food for Thought

“Everybody can be great...because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”
― Martin Luther King Jr.

Speaker Program
Each year, Rotary selects individuals from around the world to receive fully funded academic fellowships at one of our peace centers. These fellowships cover tuition and fees, room and board, round-trip transportation, and all internship/field study expenses.
