Greeter this week: Vicki Horsfield

When our E-Club announced the PEACE projects, funded by the Canada 150 Fund, I jumped at the opportunity. It had been a desire of mine to provide Macadamia nut trees to the families affiliated with our organization. The Valhalla Experimental Station (http://www.exvalhalla.net/macademianut.htm) practices sustainable agriculture on the Macadamia nut farm they started several decades ago in Guatemala. Their aim is to get Macadamia nut trees into indigenous communities. Their website states, "These trees go to replant destroyed forests and serve as remarkably efficient carbon sinks. The Macadamia agribusiness provides a more secure livelihood for the poor farmer than the volatile coffee industry. Communities can use new incomes to improve infrastructure, education and health." They go on to explain that a Macadamia nut tree "converts sixty three cubic feet of carbon dioxide and releases 55 gallons of water vapor into the atmosphere every day." It produces more oxygen than most other trees.
With the $150 from Rotary E-Club of Canada, we were able to get the seedlings delivered and to buy equipment, organic fertilizer and ash needed for the planting. Our families were ecstatic to receive these wonderful trees.

Difficult to comprehend that more people in the world have mobile phones than toothbrushes.

Thank you for presenting President Barry Raisin's keynote address from the Rotary International Convention in Atlanta. Excellent presentation, very inspiring with great messages.
Andy Adams, RC of Campbell River, D-5020

Barry Rassin, 2018-'19 Theme Address RI Assembly
I loved the example he cited of the YouTube video where one musician is playing, then another instrumentalist joins, & so on until there is a whole orchestra playing on the street. It's an apt description of Rotary's success model for doing humanitarian work in the world, starting in our home community & spreading throughout the world.
